NASA Says 2016 Climate Trends Continue to Break Records

Even the deniers now are speaking of the "pause buster" weather the planet has been having.

NASA Says 2016 Climate Trends Continue to Break Records

Two key climate change indicators — global surface temperatures and Arctic sea ice extent — have broken numerous records through the first half of 2016, according to NASA analyses of ground-based observations and satellite data.

Each of the first six months of 2016 set a record as the warmest respective month globally in the modern temperature record, which dates to 1880, according to scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York. The six-month period from January to June was also the planet’s warmest half-year on record, with an average temperature 1.3 degrees Celsius (2.4 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than the late nineteenth century.

Five of the first six months of 2016 also set records for the smallest respective monthly Arctic sea ice extent since consistent satellite records began in 1979, according to analyses developed by scientists at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, in Greenbelt, Maryland. The one exception, March, recorded the second smallest extent for that month.

...The global trend in rising temperatures is outpaced by the regional warming in the Arctic, said Walt Meier, a sea ice scientist at NASA Goddard.

“It has been a record year so far for global temperatures, but the record high temperatures in the Arctic over the past six months have been even more extreme,” Meier said. “This warmth as well as unusual weather patterns have led to the record low sea ice extents so far this year.”

Records that they now claim that they can give us worldwide to ±0.01º? When ground based thermometers were at best ±1.0º. And with fewer and fewer actual stations in CONUS they manage to give us estimated temperatures too. Not to mention vast areas of the rest of the world with no actual data, they merely put in figures based on...... on....... yeah.

Most all of the glaciers are retreating world wide. I think one glacier was found advancing in the Alps. Global warming is here to stay. It won't be long before Glacier National Park has to be renamed because their glaciers are almost all gone.

Glaciers have been retreating since the end of the LIA.

There is no magic thermostat and no magic climate.

You're usual meaningless hit-and-run.

Facts are that there are vast areas with no data in the CONUS as opposed to decades in the past, but they input whatever figures they want to get the results they want. Then they give us their magic warming. They call those numbers estimated for a reason. They have vast swaths of the earth with no data yet manage to give us temperatures by the same method, they infill with estimated figures. That isn't science, it is farce.

There was the big melt off ten thousand or so years ago but after that what was left remained relatively stable. Then the industrial age started and the mountain glaciers started melting profusely. Why aren't the mountain glaciers already gone? Heat of fusion or phase change from ice to water. 144 BTU per pound of ice at 32*F is needed to change it to liquid water at 32*F.

We have had warmer periods with far lower CO2. The Roman Warming, the Medieval Warming.

Atmospheric methane rise could have easily caused that. Methane does not last long in the atmosphere unless replenished on a regular basis. Methane is hundreds of times more efficient than CO2 in the greenhouse effect.
