Canadians fought bravely in WW2. One time I flew on a British jet cargo plane that was loaded to top secret cargo that I saw but what was weird were the passenger seats were backwards and then the stewardess served what looked like orange juice. I told her this orange juice does not taste right and she said it is cantaloupe juice. Ahh, I said Mush Melon juice and then she gave me a confused look but I drank it down greedily.

Keep in mind, of course, that going completely off-grid electricity-wise you will have to supply enough electricity to power whatever heating and cooling system your place has, as well as provide enough battery storage for periods of darkness. And these are two factors that add cost to that sort of system when compared with a grid-tied PV system. And this is why I have plans to design my own future off-grid retirement cabin with a very efficient means of heating and cooling that cabin through the use of geothermal heating and cooling and using the savings that is found from not having to rely on a fossil fuel to help pay for the added costs of that off-grid solar system. (Plus, if you could tap into wind power, that could help to reduce the battery storage cost of that system.) Thus, I think you could get the most from your investment by considering not just going off-grid in an electricity sense, but also off-grid at the same time in a fossil fuel sense. And while the combination of these two systems in a complete working package is relatively new, there are a growing number of homes that have gone down this route during the past ten years or so.

Additionally, on- and off-grid PV powered homes in different parts of the US will inevitably have different upfront retrofit costs due to their solar exposure and different payback periods due to different grid electricity costs. So you would be best off looking into similar retrofits in your particular state and your particular region in your state than relying on an inaccurate apples to oranges type of comparison between your home and an example in some other parts of the country. And, people in some areas of the country are most certainly going to get a far better return on their investment than people in other areas of the country...of which makes justoneman's figures he has presented here a bit misleading since there really is no single country-wide upfront cost nor payback period for someone who decides to go off-grid.

We've fought bravely and brilliantly in every international operation we've ever been in, from the Second Boer War all the way to Afghanistan.
