But, alas I guess that makes me a silly prepper in the eyes of those who worship government

We are not talking about every day events. We are not talking about blizzards, tornadoes or earthquakes. The thread concerns Doomsday Preppers. End of Days. Armageddon. Apocalypse.
Preparing for an act of God like an ice storm is ONE thing. Preparing for an act of MAN is another thing entirely....but hey....keep on keeping on if it floats your boat.
The government isn't going to save anyone, but rarely do people say "NO THANK YOU" after something like Hurricane Katrina....and neither would you. The government helps in the recovery.
You folks hate the government--you hate everything about it. All the meddling. All the regulations. All the taxes. But you are mighty happy to see FEMA, the National Guard, Disaster Medical Assistance Teams, Center for Disease Control, amphibious assault ships like the USS Bataan, USAF helicopters, and the coast guard show up, aren't you??
Oh....and all those awful socialist/communist countries that you despise?? Aren't they the ones who send their dollars and medical help? Let's see. Oh yeah: Afghanistan, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, the Bahamas, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominica, Dominican Republic, China, Britain, France, Germany, Finland.......on and on. I guess you don't want their help?? Their millions of dollars??
Thanks from RNG

We are seeing ADS on TV about the books, home disaster kits, generators, food, water, blankets....blah blah.
Some of the websites touting this preparation are hilarious. One recommends water for.....ready?.....sitting down...? THREE DAYS. YEP. Just 3 days. Then the very important bug repellent. The world has either been nuked or destroyed via climate/melt down and we should defnitely worry about mosquitos. Don't forget your cash. OR your whistle, signal mirror, flare and glow stick.
A Swiss Army knife would be wise. These sorts of things just crack me up. Of course many of these Apocalypse People are Christians who claim NOT to fear death....but seem to prefer the boy scout motto: Be prepared.
Semper Paratus, always prepared is the Coast Guard motto.

LMAO, yeah those nations send us just millions in aid during a hurrican or natural disaster in the US. Millions, maybe billions..right. Of course they do. Cite the millions they send by all means, as far as USCG and US government resources helping, well hell yes. That is what we pay taxes for. That is part of their duty and job. You just blew up a bunch of hyperbole bullshit that was irrelevant and unfounded. Seriously, cite your source of how much aid "those" nations you speak of send the United States.

Not going to happen.

Cue daws or goat to derail the thread in attempt to burry another of sister Clara's posts.

HERE is the response to Katrina. You'll have to research ALL the others.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intern...ricane_Katrina

As usual you and your ilk can't seem to appreciate the generosity of other nations....and yes, the U.S. sends support to them in times of need/emergencies. That, my friend, is how the world is supposed to work--together--connected.

If there is a weakness in author-Chuck Collins case, it's assuming that he can reason with his intended audience of movers and shakers in the world. It likely would have happened already if they had real concern for the longterm future.

Chuck Collins btw runs an economic policy group and I first came across him through his website: http://inequality.org/author/chuck-collins/ He describes himself as "born on third base," a reference to his own class privilege of being born into wealth; and most of his life it seems he has been swimming against the current of conventional thinking among his wealthy peers, and divested most of his inheritance to work towards making the system more equal. Inequality is affiliated with the British based - Equality Trust, established by epidemiologists-Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, who've spent years pouring over data on the various effects of economic inequality around the world and within nations, and how levels of inequality correlate with health, crime, social cohesion and wellbeing reports...much of their findings were complied in the book: The Spirit Level a few years ago.

Personally, I think the reason why Chuck Collins is an odd duck is because, as he describes, he had a happy childhood growing up in a wealthy family, and was deeply affected when he encountered people living in poverty a little later in life (sounds eerily similar to the story of the Buddha). But, most of those who keep on piling up their assets higher and higher in a game with the other competing oligarchs have a completely different outlook on life. Many of them have come from the bottom or at least the middle...from the profiles the high tech billionaires are among the worst of the lot! Trump and Bannon's rich benefactor- Robert Mercer, openly declares that a person's level of worth in society should be measured by how much or how little money they have! A New York psychologist who had a large Wall Street clientele has estimated that a quarter to one third of his clients are actually high functioning psychopaths, and that the psychopathic profile..someone with little or no empathic ability to relate to others has likely become a success advantage in the fast money environment of modern finance and investments....as long as they have a professional to keep them grounded and avoiding alienating people they have to depend on.

What is most crucial about Collins' story is that these are the people who have the power to change the system we live in today, and by and large, they refuse to do so! Most of them likely live in a complete denial of consequences (like Bernie Madoff) and the few that do, still have the selfish motivation of trying to save themselves/even if it's at the expense of everyone else.

This is not the same as the many people who've joined the permaculture and re-localization movements, and are joining or even forming their own small, largely sustainable communities. Even a middle class type who thinks survival is about building their own shelter, buying freeze-dried food and lots of guns&ammo is not someone who has power over the system as it stands now. The only way average people have power is as a group...and a large group acting together for common goals. That is just starting to happen again in America; the question is will the new union movements and groups trying to disrupt the system accomplish any goals in time.
