Perry: DOE 'looking very closely' at Defense Production Act to save coal, nukes

So the Republican President and his admin tried like hell to get higher prices or subsidies for various coal fired power plants and nuke power plants due to their supposed "resilience". That is, since they store fuel on site, they aren't shut down if infrastructure fails.

The problem was that all kinds of experts including the government's own people said that doesn't happen and it isn't a factor.

So, they had to find a new way to feed your money to their rich friends. And it looks like Perry may have found it.

Quote:
The Department of Energy is “looking very closely” at using the Defense Production Act (DPA) to keep coal and nuclear plants from closing, Secretary of Energy Rick Perry told a House committee on Wednesday.

Perry said the decision is “about the national security of our country — of keeping our plants, all of them, online” in the event of an emergency. "Having resiliency and reliability in our grid is as important to our national security as anything I can think of," he said.
Sadly:

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W. Va., pushed DOE to apply the DPA in April, weeks after generator FirstEnergy asked the agency to use its emergency powers to keep coal and nuclear plants in PJM online. A broad coalition of renewable energy and natural gas groups wrote to DOE on Tuesday saying it does not have the legal authority to apply either law.
Lots of coal in W. Virginia isn't there.

As far as I know there are 4 kinds of coal. Lignite has the least BTU's and mined in Colorado. Semi-Bitumous is mined in Ohio and has more BTU's than Lignite but Ohio coal has high sulpher. Bitumous is mined in West Virginia and Kentucky which has more BTU's than Ohio coal. Anthracite coal is mined in Pennsylvania which has the most BTU's and low sulpher. IMHO, Kentucky coal is the best.

edit: Pitchblende has the most BTU's but that is Uranium Oxide. The shutters of the Theratron had U-238 stamped on the metal and the Source was Cobalt 60. U-238 is not weapons grade but U-235 is. Pu-239 is a man made element and what made Fat Man explode and U-235 made Little Boy explode. Pu-238 powers far outer space probes where Solar Cells don't work and it won't explode. Pu-238 still powers Voyager 1 and 2 launched in the late seventies. Atoms for science and not war. Bill Clinton shut down the Savannah River Plant which was the only place that Tritium was made in the US which puts the bang in the buck of a thermonuke, simply called a Tritium Plug. Tritium is a man made isotope of Hydrogen which has two neutrons. Deuterium has one neutron and regular Hydrogen has not one neutron. Deuterium is called heavy water which is a natural isotope. Carbon 14 is another natural isotope. Schroder's Cat escaped the box before the radioactive element killed poor kitty.
