Multinationals Paying Tax

There have been lots of stories floating around that some big multinational companies have not been paying their fair share of tax in the UK, this is despite them making massive profits in this country. I include Google, Starbucks and Ebay to name but a few.

Now nobody is saying they are doing anything illegal, but surely they have a moral duty to pay into a system that they are profiting from?

The money gets taxed when it is repatriated.

Private citizens have a built in exemption before they are liable.

Living abroad you get a $90K-ish thousand threshold exemption...and more...thanks to rents and living expenses up to another $14K or so. Basically...$110K a year is your buffer.

You are supposed to file each year, anyway. However, if you NEVER plan to move back...and you've NEVER exceeded the threshold...and you skip the filing...there's nothing really bad that will happen to you. What can they get? You never owed them anything, anyway and it's a clerical thing with respect to failing to file. You were under the threshold, anyway. If you are an BONA FIDE dual CITIZEN...you are better off, as well. If Uncle Sam comes after you...and you have conducted Forensic Accounting by a CERTIFIED Public Accountant...and you SHOW you NEVER exceeded the threshold...it's doubtful if your NEW country will bother you about it...but you'd be subject to harassment if you return to the USA to LIVE.

Basically...don't cheat on your taxes!
