Ukraine’s Illegal Miners Come Out of the Darkness

Hey, IT, I saw this and thought of you. Interesting story about Ukraine's legal and illegal mining operations, the people who work for them, and the hardships with the war.

Ukraine?s illegal coal mines come out of the darkness.
Thanks from Camelot

Only it's not Ukrainian operations. This mining is occurring in the "Donetsk Peoples Republic," run by criminals and corrupted to the core. The illegal mines pay well, but they are dirty and dangerous.

Let me put "pay well" in perspective. Average yearly earnings in Ukraine, following the Russian inspired revolutions in Eastern Ukraine, are just over $2,000 ... a year.

And, the bloody irony of Ukraine buying the coal from the people with whom it's at war.

My wife and I seriously considered my moving to Ukraine for a while. I experienced Ukraine at its post-Soviet best, in 2010-2012. It's been downhill since then. I cry for my adopted country with its corrupt oligarchs on both sides of the battle lines.

That was a very interesting article Lyzza. I found it surprising that Ukraine is purchasing coal from the rebels to meet their energy needs.

Having known Kentucky coal miners that were basically poaching coal from illegal coal mines in Kentucky, dirty job and more than hard work and the coal mine you dug with picks and shovels can and will collapse on you.
