Aristides de Sousa Mendes - A Portuguese Hero

Aristides de Sousa Mendes - A Portuguese Hero
Aristides de Sousa Mendes - Um herói Português
.................................................. ...........................
This route pays homage to a unique figure in Portuguese history and, above all, to a generous heart that saved 30,000 lives from the horror of the Holocaust: Aristides de Sousa Mendes (1885-1954). "He who saves a life is to save all mankind."

Aristides de Sousa Mendes
Aristides de Sousa Mendes (July 18, 1885 - April 3, 1954) was a prestigious Portuguese diplomat who saved 30,000 lives from the Holocaust by frantically issuing visas for both individuals and families. From June 16 to 23, 1940, Aristides de Sousa Mendes disobeyed the orders imposed by dictator Salazar, guided by the dictates of his inner moral conscience. Aristides de Sousa Mendes do Amaral and Abranches was born on July 19, 1885 in Cabanas de Viriato, near Viseu. Son of Maria Angelina Ribeiro de Abranches and Judge José de Sousa Mendes, he graduated in Law from the University of Coimbra with his twin brother César, when he was 22 years old. In 1908 he married his cousin Angelina, with whom he would have 14 children. He began his diplomatic career very young and in 1910 became consul of Demerara in British Guiana. He worked as a consul in British Guiana, Zanzibar, Brazil (Curitiba and Porto Alegre), the United States (San Francisco and Boston), Spain (Vigo), Luxembourg, Belgium and, finally, . He was a family man and a patriarch who never separated from his wife and children, providing them with academic education, as well as classes in painting, drawing and music. One of his sons said one day: "We had a real chamber orchestra in our house and we invited people on a regular basis to attend our concerts. We played Chopin, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, among others. "
