Media and Internet Censorship: Merkel moves Germany closer to China

When your rating is far below the desired level, your own nation turns its back on you, your hunger for power is insatiable and you have no political will to overcome it for the good of your own country, you have no choice but to muzzle and silence any criticism, inventing external and internal enemies, who supposedly try to overthrow you.

It was for reason that Angela Merkel visited China last year. Contracts for the sale of the Meerwind offshore wind park and assembling of H135 helicopters have become a formal outcome of her visit while exchange of experience in the area of Internet and social networks' governance has been an informal, but more important result for the Chancellor. Recent events and current trend direction of electronic and print media clearly show that Merkel intends to create 'Great Firewall of Germany', like the Chinese one, whose task is to refine data. And it is quite clear that the recently established cyber forces will run this mission.

It is no longer a secret that today's mass media cannot present a clear picture of what is happening in Germany and in the world in general. Current media is a 'mouthpiece' of Merkel's Cabinet, the aim of which is the brainwashing of citizens, dissemination of pro-government propaganda and maintenance of the Chancellor's positive image.

The letter received by my colleagues and me from Chief Editor of Tagesspiegel Online Christian Tretbar also attests to Merkel's plans to make Internet in many ways dependent on the government in order to protect her from attacks of critics and opposition on both the local and international scenes.

Dear Colleagues,

Due to the BMJV new recommendations, which should be available to everyone, from now on, publication of any materials will be revised more carefully.

And now, as you know, massive changes are being observed in a culture of public debate, including the Media and Internet coverage, especially on the eve of federal elections. The social network abounds with articles, reports and comments that incite inter-ethnic and religious hatred, as well as with various criminal stories and appeals to violence. It is clear that such actions are a part of special campaigns, orchestrated from the outside with the aim to destabilize the state and discredit Chancellor Angela Merkel, the government she leads and the CDU.

Our task is to timely detect the harmful information and publish assessments of such 'data injections' in accordance with the BMJV recommendations. This way we can help to promote peace and public order in the country.

Just a reminder that on-line edition and all those employees, who have official and private social media accounts, should start to monitor closely readers' letters and opinion articles for compliance with the draft bill improving law enforcement on social networks, and if necessary, to take actions prescribed by the bill.

Sincerely,

Christian Tretbar

Like all the others, I have read the BMJV recommendations. In summary, now any press event that is just too inconvenient for Merkel should be interpreted by journalists as an orchestrated campaign against the Chancellor. Neither articles nor readers' letters and comments shall contain discontentment or any calls for the resignation of Angela Merkel and her government. Heiko Maas' Department declares these recommendations necessary to strengthen the national security.

I do not know about the others, but China along with its 'Golden Shield Project' and the 50 Cent Party's trolls (the army of pro-government bloggers) has immediately emerged in my mind as I have covered this subject. A decade ago, on the orders of the then Chinese leader Hu Jintao, the spread of news online was not allowed without the higher-ups' approval. At that time, I could not even imagine that something like this would happen in Germany. A champion of democracy, freedom of speech and media freedoms, the so-called 'Good Mother' turns into 'Evil Stepmother', who is only thinking of how to protect herself from her own countrymen. It is sad, but true. And it is difficult to argue with that.
