A gay couple (one of whom is the son of the church pastor) was assaulted by several violent homophobes who happened to be deacons at the church.

This sounds like an obvious prospect for a hate crime prosecution, especially since the cops heard the homophobic slurs. On the other hand this is Tennessee, so the odds of a local DA prosecuting it as a hate crime are zero. They'll be lucky to even get the DA to prosecute at all.

A gay Gibson County couple said they were assaulted when they tried to attend church services at the Grace Fellowship Church in Fruitland last Wednesday.

"I went over to take the keys out of the ignition and all the sudden I hear someone say 'sick'em,'" said Gibson County resident, Jerry Pittman Jr.

Pittman said the attacked was prompted by the pastor of the church, Jerry Pittman, his father.

"My uncle and two other deacons came over to the car per my dad's request. My uncle smash me in the door as the other deacon knocked my boyfriend back so he couldn't help me, punching him in his face and his chest. The other deacon came and hit me through my car window in my back," said Pittman. He said bystanders did not offer assistance. He said the deacon yelled derogatory homosexual slurs, even after officers arrived. He said the officers never intervened to stop the deacons from yelling the slurs.

"If I was on the scene I would not have allowed that. The deputy should not have allowed it if he did," said Gibson County Sheriff Chuck Arnold.

Pittman said neither he nor Lee were allowed to press charges while at the church.

"I haven't talk to him but that would be out of character for my deputy to say unless they were causing a problem themselves," said Sheriff Arnold.

Friday, the couple filed assault charges against Deacons Billy Sims and Eugene McCoy. Pittman pressed additional charges against his father and Deacon Patrick Flatt. Pastor Pittman's attorney contacted ABC 7 Eyewitness News by phone and said she had no comment and demanded we not contact the pastor.

All parties are due in court October 4.

That's what Christian love is all about. Sounds like the deputies shared in that love.

And note the name of the town.....Fruitland. Seriously, Fruitland?

Yeah, that proves it! All Christians behave that way. BTW it is a bit ironic that this happened in "Fruitland."

I guess it's not all Christians, just the entire church hierarchy.

There appear to be just as many good Christians as there are honest and noble politicians, and ethical lawyers. I'm sure there are a few somewhere, but........

They thought the Castro District was in America

They didn't realise the homosexuals had occupied it and declared it a Gays Only Zone

Amazing that a father would order his own son to be beaten up by thugs, but I guess that just proves that he follows his imaginary friend's commands about how to deal with the gay problem.

At least they did it in the parking lot so as to avoid getting blood on the pews.

Wouldn't that kind of be like a group of flaming transvestites marching in the streets of Spur, Texas and wondering why they were attacked?

Where does the Bible say that fathers should hire thugs to beat up their homosexual sons?

Chapter and verse please.

Or were you just lying again?

I think violence in both situations is inexcusable, ditto in the alleged case described in this story

The difference is that I never hear the homosexuals criticising the Castro attacks, the Phyllis Burgess attack, the vandalising of churches, etc

They rub their chubby hands with glee of people jobs and businesses are threatened because they take a stand for Christ.

Homosexuals and their apologists applaud attacks on Christians and people of faith, like the guy at the end of the Castro vid, and the other clips down the side
