BOSTON (Reuters) - New Hampshire lawmakers easily defeated a bill on Wednesday that would have been the first step toward reversing the state's law that allows same-sex couples to marry.

The attempt to repeal a law that made gay marriages legal in the state, failed by a vote of 116-211 in the Republican-controlled legislature, drawing applause from many lawmakers in the historic statehouse in Concord.

Gov.John Lynch, a Democrat, had promised to veto the bill if it reached his desk.

State lawmakers approved civil unions in 2007 and same-sex marriages in 2009, when both houses in the state legislature were controlled byDemocrats.

Close to 2,000 gay and lesbian couples have been married in New Hampshire since the current law went into effect January 1, 2010. The new law would have replaced same-sex marriages with civil unions starting in 2013, but marriages that took place before the repeal would have remained valid.

Very good news.

It also reveals which Republicans are bigots and which are not.

Yeah, maybe because the Earth did not fly off it's axis into the sun, reasonable minds decided it was an absurd vote in the first place.

As a native of the Granite State I am very proud.

I would have been prouder if no one had voted for the stupid bill....but defeat is good enough.

On a side note, the vote was 116-211....that means 63 members didn't even vote.

The NH legislature has 400 members in the House of Representatives and 24 members in the Senate....that makes it the 4th largest legislature in the English speaking world....behind the British Parliment, the Indian Parliment and the US Congress.

Also the current makeup of the NH House is 294 Republicans and only 103 Democrats....that means over 100 Republicans had to vote to kill this measure (and that's assuming that all 103 Democrats voted against it)

I like this New Hampshire Republican:

Quote:
http://www.advocate....riage_Equality/

Just to ensure the message was clear, Republican representative Seth Cohn, who supports marriage equality, proposed banning marriage between left-handed people. That didn't pass either.

Also, an attempt to amend the original bill to add civil union recognition failed 82-266.

Time to put this issue on a ballot and let We The People of New Hampshire decide if they want to have homosexual marriage rammed down their throats

Oh wow, people are being forced to marry someone of the same sex? That IS a problem.

We do know that mixed-race marriage wouldn't pass if put to a ballot in Mississippi.

Why should the good folks in Mississippi have to put up with having mixed-race marriage rammed down their throats?

What does mixed race marriage have to do with homosexual marriage?

Same issues of due process and equal protection under the 14th Amendment. That's why I asked you:

Why should the good folks in Mississippi have to put up with having mixed-race marriage rammed down their throats?

Like NJ governor Christie, it's clear that you support having the majority vote on the civil rights of a minority. So I'll ask you again in the spirit of the bigoted sentiment you so plainly expressed:

Why should the good folks in Mississippi have to put up with having mixed-race marriage rammed down their throats?

Nope it's not the same issue, despite your continual attempts to pretend otherwise

If it was the same issue then polygamy and consanguineous marriage would be legal

Because marriage is defined as the union of one man and one woman, both consenting unrelated adults, regardless of their race.

That is a world apart from redefining marriage as two homosexuals, multiple men and women or one man and his goat.

Civil society can include whomever it desires in it's recognition of marriage, as long as the relationship is legal and consenting. And it cannot preclude those relationships out of purely discriminatory reasoning without legitimate state interests in doing so. And guess where same sex relationships fall?
