Thanks cacon!

I came within a hair of buying this 'assault rifle' - a Marlin 336W, Lever Action .30-30 - today.

Weighs seven pounds!! It sorta reminds me of my old Red Ryder BB gun. I've wanted one since I was a kid, and this is a good game rifle which I'd like to have ... all things considered.
The Marlin 30-30 lever action was the first rifle I bought and had open sights. I was 16 and was legal for me. Do they make it with a gold trigger these days. Not to brag but mine had a gold plated trigger.

Please guys, let's have a thread where we just discuss guns and ammo, OK?

I sold one of my telescopes today, and it will finance that Marlin.

Anyone have any thoughts on a Winchester Model 94, or other lever-action rifles?
Thanks from Twisted Sister

The Rifleman used a lever action and spin with his finger reloading and cocking it. A TV show with high morals and at the end of the show Mark would get valuable advise. I would do the same with mine even though I did not have a big round handle.

If you buy it primarily for home defense I would go with one chambered for a pistol cartridge. Can hold ten rounds then. See: Best Lever Action Rifle for Self Defense | Range365

I cant speak to lever actions specifically but I can speak to Mossberg in general. What I have found with Mossberg is you get good quality at a great price point. With Winchester/Browning you normally get great quality with the high price that goes with it. I have a rim fire henry rifle. I enjoy it. Its very pricey though

I really want a more or less "all-purpose" rifle, with an ability to hunt deer and elk or just take out shooting sometimes, at the range probably, not really a self defense weapon.

I know it's silly, but I just love the way that Marlin with a scope looks!
Thanks from roastpork

The 30-30 is fine for deer, less so for elk, unless you have a close shot. See: Elk Cartridges
