Make great shotguns. I have a Mossberg model 88, 12 gauge pump.

I will bet a dime against a donut that the first long gun you fired was an M-14.

I sold one of my telescopes today, and it will finance that Marlin.

Anyone have any thoughts on a Winchester Model 94, or other lever-action rifles?
Had one of these in the 70's.

A scope on a lever action rifle is just wrong.

Then you would lose.
Question: Based on what information about me would you make that bet?

BTW, I was born with a "long gun." The M-14 issued to me was a rifle.

Yeah it does.
Many millions of lever action rifles have been produced since the 30-30 came out. Winchester, Marlin, and Savage have and still produce the lever models. Mossberg who has produced many quality guns at reasonable prices now offers their version of the 30-30 lever action rifle. At first glance, it resembles the Winchester model 94 of years past.

Unfortunately, Winchester decided to price their lever rifle beyond the price that a hunter would expect to pay for a utility rifle. I am not sure as to why they did that but the Mossberg will fill the gap very nicely.

Like the 94, it is light and handy to carry which makes it lighter then a Marlin in 30-30. Both are great guns and it would be a matter of personal choice as to which one you would select. My idea of a lever action 30-30 is a working personís rifle, which has been true for generations. It should be affordable for the average working class person, which the Mossberg is. I had a 13 year old who is small for his size shoot it and he fell in love with it. He has no problem with the weight or recoil. He has made suggestions about something under the Christmas tree for him. For more info on Mossberg you can go to O.F. Mossberg & Sons | Built Rugged. Proudly American.
Mossberg .30-30 Win. Rifle Review

The Mossberg and Winchester top eject, and there is a Winchester angle eject. The Marlin side ejects.

I think I know why, but, why?

You forget, piece. The fucking thing is called a piece. This is your piece and this is your gun, one for shooting and one for fun.

It's a preference. But the lever action rifle was designed as an open sights weapon. The effective range of the 30 30 cartridge is 100 yards, before drop becomes an issue anyway. It was not designed as a long range cartridge. The 30 30 lever action rifle is the perfect 100 yard or less rifle for deer hunting. Especially on horseback, or small RV. If you want a scoped rifle I would suggest the 30 06 Springfield.

No, I was in the Marine Corps.

This is my rifle, and this is my gun.

NEVER heard a rifle called a piece while in the Marines.

Now, back to my question. WHY would you bet my first "long gun" was the M-14 issued to me by the marine Corps?

Hmmm. The 30-06 delivers 50 percent more muzzle energy than a 30-30. But, a 30-06 isn't my idea of a fun gun. Kicks like a mule.

I love venison.
