Don't Let Genetically Engineered Crops Take Over! Take Action!

In the last months of the Bush Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture proposed some bad rules that significantly weaken the oversight of genetically engineered crops. These rules are bad for consumers, the environment, and would allow the biotechnology industry to regulate itself. Can you demand that the Obama Administration ditch the Bush rules, and make rules that will adequately regulate genetically engineered crops?

All of our crops are genetically altered by selective breeding. What, in specific, is worse about crops altered directly with genetic engineering? Be specific and back it up with scientifically acceptable evidence, not frankenfood fearmongering.

The May 9, 2009 article you cite talks about studies, but gives no specifics and does not identify any of the studies:

"A number of studies over the past decade have revealed that genetically engineered foods can pose serious risks to humans, domesticated animals, wildlife and the environment. Human health effects can include higher risks of toxicity, allergenicity, antibiotic resistance, immune-suppression and cancer. As for environmental impacts, the use of genetic engineering in agriculture could lead to uncontrolled biological pollution, threatening numerous microbial, plant and animal species with extinction, and the potential contamination of non-genetically engineered life forms with novel and possibly hazardous genetic material."

This sounds like junk science from an advocacy group.

The "Responsible Shopper" link likewise makes conclusions about GM foods. No citations are given and no specifics are given.

I don't like the idea of animals being genetically altered. But, I also know that we have a history of junk science in this country where people have made unfounded claims because it aids their pet cause.

After you go through a series of links in the May 3, 2009 website article, you finally found some citations. Unfortunately, each citation is in an article by the same doctor. I found a couple of the articles cited by the doctor, none of which support the hypothesis that genetically modified foods are harmful.

Now, here's a researched article that supports your position:
