The Likely Cause of Addiction Has Been Discovered

And it's not what you think, or so the author of this blog claims. His writing style is wordy so I will give a very brief summary, with a link to the article. I didn't chase the links embedded in it, but still it was an interesting read.

The following is now all prefaced with he claims ...

There is a famous experiment, repeated many times and confirmed each time that if you put a rat in a cage with two water bottles but have one of them containing a cocaine solution, the rat will go to the cocaine more and more often until it only goes there and dies of an OD. There you go. You now know it all.

But not quite. These were all small, plain cages and the rat was alone. If on the other hand you build a big, comfy cage, and give the rat company and toys and whatever else rats consider being a fun time and the two waters, they still will go to the cocaine some, but not that much and none OD.

Then he talks about how high the heroin use rates were of GIs in Nam. But noted that when they got back, many of them quit without any rehab or outside help or whatever.

So it is boredom/unhappyness/dissatisfaction/dispair that is the main cause of addiction.

Interesting.

Wow. Cocaine acts as endorphins in your brain, makes you feel good, and people become to like it and the more and more they use it the more and more they become dependent upon it to keep that "Feel Good feeling"

this is new?

actually yes. the last sentence is the one I directed my comment.

People are bored unhappy dissatisfied .. they take cocaine, they feel great, they have energy, they feel less pain, less bored..

they get addicted because the more they use it, the less their body produces the real endorphins so they become dependent on the drug to feel good about themselves to end boredom etc..

The findings can be reinforced by looking at actors and rock stars, dissatisfaction and boredom leads to OD.

Sounds like a load of bullshit to me. Rats are not human beings, does nothing to explain why two siblings, raised by exactly the same parents in the same house, treated the same way, etc. One becomes an addict and one does not.
Plus humans become addicted to many deferent things, drugs, alcohol, sex, food, gambling, etc. etc.

And yes, I have some experience in the matter. I'm a recovering drug & alcohol addict.
Thanks from LongWinded

There is a constant debate about the relative significance of nurture vs nature but it is pretty well established that both have an effect. With siblings, they do not have the same influences on them, just being different ages and therefore in different environments, and their parents etc. change with time. And even identical twins can just be intrinsically different.

Yes, his view is an oversimplification and far from a complete answer, or a cure-all. There is also the many cases where people use substances without becoming dependent addicts. But still it was a different way to look at this situation.

Oh, I quite agree. As a long term member of AA I hear these sorts of debates all the time.
So far as I'm concerned personally I don't care much WHY or HOW I because addicted, my focus has to be on doing something about it. Matters little if I break my leg falling off a bike or falling off a ladder while cleaning my house's windows, I have to focus on treating that broken leg.
Thanks from LongWinded
