Colorado's investment in IUDs and other fire-and-forget birthcontrol produced a "mira

Quote:
The Colorado Family Planning Initiative spent comparatively small sums making IUDs and other long-term birth control methods (such as implants and injections) available to women, through a "no wrong door" approach that let women start their journey through a variety of agencies, and included after-school and other counseling services, and also provided birth control to women on maternity wards before they went home with their babies.

The results were amazing: teen births and abortions dropped by nearly 50%, and the birth-rate among teens who were already mothers fell by 58%; there were also dramatic reductions in high-risk births.

For ever dollar spent on the initiative, the state saved $5.85 over the next three years in reduced family benefits and assistance payments.

The program is so successful that many states are copying it, including Oregon, Washington and Delaware.
Colorado's investment in IUDs and other fire-and-forget birthcontrol produced a "miracle" / Boing Boing

A program that works?
Quick! Repubs get in the way to help prove how government screws things up!!!

That evil Colorado. Things like that promote illicit fornication. Everybody knows that.

Let's get all the good social conservatives and fundamentalists to storm the Colorado state house and demand they eliminate it.

Did I do that right?

From my understanding the "no wrong door" approach to sex has been a successful method of birth control for generations.

Having an IUD implanted in the US, can cost $750, getting the same device in Brazil might cost $10. In Canada it might cost $50.
This is the triumph of lawyers over doctors.
The company that owns the patent to the only IUDs allowed in the US, is a producer of Birth Control pills, and they'd rather get paid every month, than just once.
This is an example of why the US system costs so much and provides so little.

Some people would rather demand that others should make the choice they want instead of recognizing what actually works.

If everybody in the U.S. would send me $1, I wouldn't have to go to work tomorrow either.
But I'm still going to stick with what actually works instead of insist on something that doesn't ...

Eventually we can have a system that people who want children would have to apply first and be approved by the state. This would be sensible, it would also allow for DNA testing and other medical advancements to come into play. That would allow the State to be able to make a decision based on the probabilities of the outcome of their offspring.
