Yes, dammit, I do believe GOOD doctors have a strong desire to help humanity. You are a bloody cynic.
Is materialism now the buzz-word Progressive hide behind to justify coercion? In the real-world, people enter a field of choice based on that occupations monetary reward. Why would anyone invest that much time and money only to find that they are to be limited in their ability to make money?
Thanks from Sabcat

Call me crazy, but isn't it possible to enter the medical field because you want to help humanity/save lives AND make money. JUDAS.
Being a doctor wasn't always so lucrative. My uncle was a doctor in a small rural community. He delivered every baby for miles around and probably collected $25 bucks a baby--if that. Sometimes he got chickens and eggs--sometimes he got a ham. There are still doctors, nurses, attorneys AND politicians who aren't in it for the money.
What the hell is wrong with these people? Well, at least they can't say that about teachers---since obviously there's NO MONEY in it. In fact, there's less and less every year.
The field of medicine requires money. This is not the 1930's. School, insurance, and overhead require money. One would hope that all doctors enter the field for the good of mankind but, the reality is, no doctor is going to stay in business long if they cant make a justifiable living at it.
The teaching profession is a different matter. The level of education in this country is abominable. Considering the amount of money spent per child, the teaching profession needs to be overhauled.
Thanks from webguy4 and Sabcat

Materialism is a mental disorder. That's the first time I have agreed with you.

You bloody cynic, I already told you why a person would jump; through all the hoops to be a doctor: To help humanity.

I think it is cynical to believe what you said. With the cost involved in becoming a Doctor, the cost of the liability insurance, money is now a necessity. Before it is over there will have to be serious reform to education as well. Its not impossible, but I think we need to step back an see how everything is linked before we start throwing switches that will affect the entire system. I personally favor a single payer but at the same time I also understand that it will cause repercussions across several facets of our economy and educational institutions.

So why are there more doctors parking their 7 series at the country club than working for doctors w/o borders?

Fuck, I would bet that there are more US trained plastic surgeons than US trained doctors volunteering in 3rd world nations.
Thanks from username and Fargo
