When universal health care and immigration mix

Down syndrome residency case 'just tip of an iceberg' | The Australian

Down Syndrome WA spokeswoman Jan Gothard said it was standard practice for families with Down syndrome children to be rejected for permanent residency in Australia.

Dr Gothard said a British midwife working in a Perth hospital was refused permanent residency by the immigration department because her Down syndrome child was considered a financial burden on the country.

The case follows that of German doctor Bernhard Moeller, who, as The Australian reported last week, had his application for permanent residency refused for similar reasons.

An interesting article...

You may not be aware, but US laws already exist that allow rejection of a person for residency (and thus citizenship) if they would be considered a 'burden on society.'

If the person has family here that is willing to accept the financial responsibility, then they may be allowed entry, otherwise they are rejected.

I understand that, but in these cases, the people are pretty summarily kicked for medical reasons. Period. I mean one of the families was that of a physician.
