Iran election: Reformists win all 30 Tehran seats

In the just held elections in Iran, moderates have won all the Tehran seats, and these are the ones that are most influential in appointing their "Assembly of Experts". Better still, the hardliners lost big-time.

Quote:

The results are a huge setback for hardliners. Two of the most prominent amongst them have lost their seats, and a third is hovering right at the bottom, in danger of being eliminated.

The biggest shock is the poor showing for Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi, the current chairman of the Assembly. He replaced former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani when he was forced to relinquish the role. The irony is that Mr Rafsanjani is now leading the polls in Tehran.

The top ideologue of the hardliners, Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi has also lost his seat. He is the spiritual guide of a group that includes former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

When is the Ayatollah up for reelection?

The hardliners were not able to campaign against the evil Satan America. The President smartly kicked that chair out from underneath them and pushed their nuclear program back 15 years at the same time. Playing the Ayatollah's evil foil for the last 35 years only strengthened the hardliners grip in Iran. Cue the Right wing whining.

I don't think this matters. It does nothing to control Iran sponsored terrorism. Now Iran has more funds for terrorism, thanks to the administration.

Because the previous policies kept the hardliners in power. With the high probability of reformers taking power, that will probably change too.

Another Obama win and Tea Party loss.

Oh please, please, please figure out that these things are nothing more than a fašade.

Iran is and will ALWAYS be an Islamic Theocracy.

This is not a win.

Correct. These elections are meaningless as long as the Islamist dictator is in control.

And that program was set up by the hardliners which should soon be out of power. But enjoy living in the past.

With all due respect you have chosen to remain completely misinformed about Islam. Islam does not allow for secular Government, it also does not constrain it's adherents from lying to non-believers in order to get what it wants.

The youth of Iran indeed want reform, and they tried unsuccessfully in 2009 to start a revolution to overthrow the regime.
