Belated Greetings

Hi all. I'm doing things backwards. I began by posting in an existing thread and have already engaged a little with RNG. Figured I should probably post a brief hello in this thread.

I enjoy discussing politics and political philosophy. It helps to keep my mind sharp and active. I have little interest in purely eristic debates. I prefer discussion (calm or vigorous) to mere verbal battle and all its fruitless rage.

I like queso dip and cats.
Thanks from webguy4

I like 'em too.

Eristic, I had to look it up. How could I live almost seven decades and never have seen it??? Yes, I read more than comic books ... on occasion.

Welcome to you!!

I like purely eristic debates because they require a poignancy and wit not found in formality. Besides that, you can learn a lot about a person from how they frame their arguments, especially when given the leeway to do so. What they want, how they see the world. It's helpful for understanding how to reconcile your viewpoints; or let them give you the rope to hang them with, if that's your interest.

Thanks for the comment, Oh-Four.

I enjoy the art of cross-examination, and refutation has its place, but the nature of an eristic debate is discordance for the sake of strife or strife for the sake of discordance. (It's difficult to say where the circle begins and ends.) I agree that we can learn something, if not a lot, from a person who engages with others simply to dominate them, but my own interests center on learning something, if not a lot, about a topic that exists independently of those who are investigating it.

When Thrasymachus asks Socrates if he needs a wet nurse, in that moment we certainly learn something about his character; but The Republic would have lost nearly all its substance, its beauty and meaning, had the entire dialogue appeared in the form of a purely eristic debate.
