I'll turn 45 in a couple of months. (How the hell did that happen)?

As my wife -- who is 11 years my junior, but far more mature than me -- can attest, my mental age usually hovers somewhere around 14.

I turned 58 a week ago today while vacatioing in the Grand Canyon State, aka Arizona. My nephew, though, will turn 40 this month. And to think I fed him when he was a baby. I got to get him a 40th birthday funny card.

When I walked along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon last Saturday (01/28/2012), they had markers of how many years it took for the Grand Canyon to form. It was all measured by the length of the paved trail that my friend and I walked. When I came upon the 58th year marker, it didn't seem like very much compared to two billion years ago. After walking a mile, wow, that's a long time it took for the one of the eight wonders of the world to form.

If there was an elevator that could run from the top of the South or North Rim all way down to the Colorado River, you would start at the present day. Upon reaching the Colorado River, it would say "2 billion years" level.

So, with a couple of exceptions, we're basically a bunch of old farts around here.

Uh-uh, speak for yourself. I might be almost 44, but I still feel 23.

I felt like I was 28 when I hiked the five miles along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I've been very physically active all my life. And I still do everything now that I did when I was 22. Though, perhaps a little more slowly, and with more soreness afterward.

"Old" can be relative. To my children -- who range in age from 5 to 20 -- I'm "old." (At least that's what they say until I take them running, hiking or deer hunting -- and they can't keep up.)

To my wife, I'm "older," perhaps. To my father, who is 75 and still very active, I'm still just a "kid."

But, all that said, I would say yes, to a college-aged youngster, many of us would look like "old farts," hee heee.

I always try to stay active. My nephew, as I said, will be 40 later this month. That sort of makes me feel old.

Yes, that's strange. It's not so much your own age, but the age of others that can make you feel "old." I'm still having trouble grasping having a kid who is about to turn 20. I can recall being that age like it was a couple of weeks ago...LOL.
