I would guess the most contentment at the end could come from knowing you did your best.

I can't imagine feeling that way.

At my age...I'm chasing after a Grammy...or two. Even starting a Bachelor in Music seeing as it can only help! My audition is on the 29th at the conservatorium. Very creepy feelings about it...like a first date......

The human animal is a social animal, our value and our pleasure comes from our relationships with other people. Everything else is just a support mechanism.

Have deep relationships with other people, you don't need many, it's not the quantity, it's the quality of the relationship. A deep connection with another person is the most satisfying experience a human can have in my experience, I have been through periods where I have such relationships in my life, and periods where such relationships are absent, and there is a comfort I experience, when I'm in the presence of people I feel deeply connected with that transcends all the other aspects of life.

In theory I agree with goober, but in practice I am unable to find people who don't suck outside of my family. The Bible (Old Testament) provides a clear example of how people should be behave. I know that it's possible for people to behave well from reading history books. But in modern times, I am unable to find people who don't suck.

time after time, i've gone out of my way, time and expense, to be there for other people when they're down or in trouble.

when it's me, no one steps up, no one.

That's because you suck, if you become more of a decent human being and open up to people and connect with them, life is beautiful.

Swedenborg's view was that heaven and hell begin on earth, if the people around you torment you, it's because you deserve to be in hell, and if the people around you bring you joy, it's because you deserve to be in heaven.
And you can change....

sicken and die in such a way you get to say goodbye to all your family and they to you. and then the doctors drug you up so you die without discomfort.

any additions to the list?
You watched way too much '50s and '60s American TV.

I defer to Hemingway, I believe. "What's right is what feels good later." Or words to that effect. Panther effectively said the same thing in post #3.
