It's going to stop. That may mean some members are going to go away, but it's going to stop.

Edit: Make that 10 posts out of 20 responses, because Daws posted one more stupid response while I typed the post above.

First of all, no one is in the military who didn't want to be in it. A volunteer military is vastly different from a conscripted military. In a conscripted military, people take time out from their lives to serve in the military. In an all-volunteer force, being in the military is a central part of their lives, and their futures.

Everyone who's in the military is there because they want to be there.

Next, the world has never had a shortage of politicians who bravely fight wars with other people's children for the sake of the mother/father/homeland. Yeah....

So we are involved in a war, a war the 911 Saudis started, with a nation that poses no threat to the US ... again, and one of our volunteer soldiers was killed in the botched raid on Trump's watch, and automatically he's a hero?

Why is he a hero?

What is a hero in 21st Century America?
The latter part of the question refers to a casualty in a recent military operation and I think casts some aspersions on the heroic qualities of his effort because of the supposed failure of the mission. The failure or success of the mission we are in a poor position to judge since we have no objective source of information. In either case that is irrelevant.

Heroes only always win in fiction. The genuine risk of personal disaster only gives the brave effort more credence as heroic.

My point is that heroes perform extraordinary acts.

As Clara noted, current use of the word have cheapened its meaning.

Killed in the service of the USA qualifies as extraordinary, doesn't matter if the president is bush, Clinton, Obama, or Trump.

Look, in the military their are various medals for valor that can be awarded. Almost all of them state the medal is awarded for actions ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY.
Understand?

Many that are KIA are simply doing their duty, their job, and get killed in the process.

WOW, this is the first time I thought you was smart. A hero, is a person who helps an old person up, once they have fallen.

No, that is a guy/gal that is simply not an asshole.
NOT being an asshole makes one a hero now?
WTF?

The Purple Heart is a medal.

But , in any case , a medal may mean official recognition, but it does not make a hero.
