But , in any case , a medal may mean official recognition, but it does not make a hero.

Nah, not a chance, no comparison.

Here's an interesting aside, a bit off topic admittedly.
Can a person perform an unquestionably heroic act but NOT be a hero?
Is that possible?
My personal opinion would be no.

Possible definitions of a hero:

1. Someone who goes to the aid of others in spite of known personal risk.

2. Someone who is admired and we aspire to emulate.

3. The protagonist of a narrative, possibly fictional.

4. Someone who perseveres through suffering.

5. Someone who sets a good example.

So John Kerry is a hero.
He certainly exhibited bravery, risked his life in the service of his country, exposed himself to risk to save others.

That makes him a hero, right?

Kerry did service to his country which is heroic, but his heroism is tainted by his faking embelishments to his record.

Wrong. The heroic act is not canceled out or marred by later actions. The act of heroism stands by itself

What "faking embellishments", be specific..

Kerry tried to get a Purple Heart for scratches on his butt he incurred while running away from a handgrenade blast he tossed himself to blow up a cache of buried rice he stumbled on they took to be VC supplies. Other "injuries" he suffered were so trivial his commanding officer kept turning down his requests for Purple Heart medals. He kept pushing them through until he got enuf to get early release from Vietnam.

You're a veteran you know damned good and well that the one does not "recommend" himself for any sort of award or decoration.

Yeah, It's a damned good idea to run in the opposite direction from where you just threw a fucking fragmentation grenade.....DUUUUUH........

What in the fuck does PH's he did NOT get have to do with the ones he DID? And a PH is NOT a award for "heroics" in an of itself.
It's an award for getting WIA/KIA. Now you might well get wounded in the process of heroics that got you a Silver Star of something.
You also know that officers VERY often got abbreviated tours of duty shorter that the 13 months and enlisted men did.

Sorry, you're mistaken I have never claimed veteran status.
