We are genetically predisposed to many things.

We are greatly influenced by our environment, more than we are aware of.

Still, I do believe it is possible fir a person to exercise free will, but in practice it happens very rarely.

If free will doesn't exist, then we have no real basis for saying anything is true or false, as our judgement isn't actual judgement at all, but nothing more than a chemical reaction. For example, someone who believes climate change to be true only believes it because his brain chemistry is arranged in a way to were he has no choice but to believe it.

We feel as if free will exists, but all the evidence suggests otherwise, just as all the evidence demonstrates that the nutters will make life impossible on this planet. It is all very well to discuss the matter amongst sensible people, but when cranks like misty get to work on it we see how anything can be used to defend their weird notions.

Of course there is free will: the ability to act with one's own discretion. Self-determination. Autonomy. Independence.

But we learn very quickly there are consequences for our actions which temper our choices. Gradually we learn to consider our choices and their consequences.
For every action, there's a reaction. We become more disciplined....or not. Example: Donald Trump

AND our environment, upbringing, genetics have great bearing on what type of decisions we make.

A recent study showed that men with greater upper body strength are more likely to be conservative in their politics.

So do I choose to be conservative? Or are conservatives more likely to do push-ups?

Conservatives are more apt to hero worship bullies like Putin and Trump. They look at pictures of Putin with his shirt off and go "Gee, if I pump lots of iron I will look like that".

Then they look at pictures of Trump on the golf course and say, "Damn, if I pump lots of iron I won't look like that."

Go to Africa and find conservatives swinging through the trees, I expect, if you like that sort of thing.

Free will. You either believe in it or you dont.

You can't prove it.

What is the opposite of free will? Is it "controlled will"? Who would be doing the controlling?
