It has happened once after the Twelfth Amendment in 1824 between Jackson, Adams, Clay, and Crawford.

There are too many variables in your scenario before the general election. You are assuming Cruz is gone. Rubio can still activate his run if there is a brokered convention. Ryan can make a run. Romney can make a run. A third party is not required before the convention.

It is mathematically possible, but not plausible considering two-hundred years of presidential elections and every election has followed a predictable calculation for the past one-hundred and fifty years with two exceptions.

LOL. I wish we all could be CA girls but....no. U of Wisconsin grad. Funny you should mention Berkeley though. My grandfather went to Berk in the 20s. Got kicked out for bootlegging cigarettes and hootch. Went to U of Texas and eventually became an optomotrist....after gigging as drummer in a swing band. Pops smoked 3 packs of Pall Malls a day and drank like a fish. Lived to be 94. Died a wealthy, happy man.

I think Cruz has a pretty good shot now since Rubio and the others are out of his way. Rubio left behind something like 150 delegates (or so), and these people have to go somewhere, and I doubt that Trump will get them, and Cruz is more of a fit for them. So if you add Cruz+Rubio's delegates, it is roughly the same as Trump.

Neither Trump or Cruz might not reach the delegate nomination threshold, and I could see them being close to tied but not enough. Kasich then would be the holder of the "shotgun clause", releasing his delegates to a candidate for a return of something, maybe the Vice Presidency, a cabinet position, something. How is the GOP going to bring in someone else? Paul Ryan? No thanks. But who (or whom....) do they have?

It would seem to me that someone or a few people could go to the political party and just say, "I am not running, but if shit goes bad, you can draft me." If Hillary Clinton drops dead tomorrow (that would be wonderful), would the Democrats choose Sanders? I doubt it. They would find Biden on whatever golf course he is at and tell him the good news.

The Democrats have the advantage in the Electorial College, Northeast including New York, Jersey, Pennsylvania, Great Lakes States, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, usually Iowa and Ohio (which is the most heavily contested state of all) and the Pacific Coast states of California, Oregon, and Washington. Add Colorado, New Mexico and possibly Florida and that's it. Again, the whole election comes down to Ohio and Florida. I don't think Cruz can shake any of those states loose. He is too Southern (and Canadian!), too religious, just too Texas and slimy.

Trump/Cruz vs. Hillary Clinton? Can I barf now? Authoritarian/totalitarian governments should teach their kids, that in democracy, the stupid vote and this ends up being their choices. If I lived in the USA, I would vote for Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate. The problem with the Electorial college is that someone who votes Republican in Vermont or Democratic in Utah are just wasting their time. The EC is unique in the USA and should be done away with. Also, the members of the EC (who are strangely anonymous people) can vote whoever they want. They can vote for David Letterman and guess what, Letterman would be legally President.

This is the delegate count as of Saturday March 19, 2016.

Donald Trump
621

Ted Cruz
396

Marco Rubio
168

John Kasich
138

Ben Carson
8

Jeb Bush
4

Rand Paul
1

Mike Huckabee
1

Carly Fiorina
1

Now, in bold, Cruz's delegate total and Rubio's delegate total, totalling 564 delegates if all the Rubio delegates go to Cruz. I cannot really see that many Rubio people jumping to Trump, especially seeing that Rubio got his delegates basically from more liberal areas, who hate Trump more than Cruz.

What is going to happen with the delegates from Carson, Huckabee, Paul (my guy I wanted to win but knowing months before that he had a much chance as the Browns winning the Superbowl.) Does the 1 Huckabee delegate have to pay for their own hotel and expenses or does the Party help? The convention will be in Cleveland, Ohio, who in the hell wants to go there?

If the orphan delegates (Carson and below) wanted to come and I had the resources, we could meet for a few drinks, smoke a bowl with the Rand Paul delegate out back, and then sneak some liquor in, sit in the top risers and get faced laughing our heads off at the Trump vs. Cruz idiots beat each other to death. That convention is going to be entertaining as hell.

My Dad who already was a teacher with a teaching degree from Ohio State University spent four summers with us living in Berkeley where he was studying astronomy in the early sixties. At a family reunion two years ago I made a snide remark about UC Berkeley Golden Bears where dad was studying astronomy and he said with a grim face that UC Berkeley is my alma mater completely forgetting his Ohio State Buckeye roots and two summers at San Diego State studying astronomy during the early and mid-sixties. Fast forward to 1972 at sea in hostile waters and the officers could not find Jupiter. I knew exactly where Jupiter was at.

edit: To find Polaris the "North Star" First find the big dipper that is easy to find and the handle of the Big Dipper aka Big Bear points to Polaris to find true north.

Cruz could very easily broker a deal with Rubio, perhaps even push all the non-Trump delegates to back Rubio, and guess what? The momentum turns and the Republicans nominate Rubio instead of Trump, who is much more in keeping with the party line and a safer candidate that the party can accept to represent their public image.

Then Trump bolts the convention, takes his supporters and his ego with him, runs a 3rd party campaign, and whatever Democrat runs, wins against a divided opposition. It's an American tradition. It's like when Roosevelt ran his Bull Moose campaign in 1912. The unknown Democrat Wilson said, "The only question that now remains is which Republican candidate will get more flowers at his funeral."
