Cuba Rejects $50,000 US Aid for Hurricane Damage

Cuba has rejected a $50,000 US aid proposal to compensate for the damage caused by Hurricane Dennis.

Authorities from the US Department of State said, the aid had been

proposed to meet the immediate needs of those affected; however, the government of Fidel Castro has turned down the proposal.

The Cuban government also rejected former offers of US humanitarian aid.

Meanwhile, Cuban leader Fidel Castro, in a televised speech, said, the number of deaths in Cuba due to the hurricane has increased to 16 and the cost of damage was more than $1.4 billion.

Several residential areas were totally or partially destroyed or due to the hurricane.

Doesn't it seem foolish for a leader to allow his people to suffer, just to prove a point?

very foolish

Yes, it is very foolish. I guess his pride means more than his countrymen (Not the least surprising.)

Well, the bright side, we just saved more money for the war on terror. (Two thumbs up).......

$50,000 does not seem like a lot of money when there is $1.4 billion in damage. I would accept it for sure, but maybe Castro saw it as such a negligable amount, he would rather not feel bowed down for such a small sum. But I am not trying to defend him, only to understand.

If I was $28,000 in debt, and someone tried to help by giving me a single dollar bill, I'd probably tell them to fuck off too. That's the same ratio as what we offered.

Good point.

Also, Nebraskaboy, at the rate old George is going with his check book, $50,000 is less than piss change.

It would be a crime for $50,000 that was intended for relief to go to the War on Terror instead.

You speak of a leader whose pride means more than his own countrymen? I suggest you take a look at your own leader, good sir.

You might see a leader who also just signed in $82,000,000,000 in war funding. You might also see a leader that just cut $3,000,000,000 from Veteran Hostpital funding. Your leader was a deserter from the military. Your leader pays nothing but lip service to the real heroes of the country.

His inflated pride and family vendetta put us in this war. His countrymen meant nothing to him when he was in the military, and they mean nothing to him now.

That's a good point, but by turning away ANY assistance, he is doing his people a dis-service, and he is also lessening the chances that other countries will be generous.

I'd thank them for the Dollar, every journey begins with a single step. And I do not think I'd be setting a very good image of myself by telling them to 'fuck off'. A 'no thank you' would be more appropriate.
