‘I expect loyalty,’ Trump told Comey, according to written testimony

Fired FBI Director James B. Comey said President Trump told him at the White House “I need loyalty, I expect loyalty” in their private White House dinner conversation in January, according to written remarks from Comey offering a vivid preview of his testimony Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

In seven remarkable pages of prepared testimony, Comey describes a president obsessed with loyalty and publicly clearing his name amid an FBI investigation of his associates, and the FBI director’s growing unease with the nature of the demands being made of him in their private conversations.

Since firing Comey last month, the president has denied reports that he sought a pledge of loyalty from the FBI director amid a Justice Department probe into possible coordination between Trump associates and Russian operatives. Comey’s written remarks do support another Trump claim — that the FBI director repeatedly assured the president that he was not personally under investigation.

But overall, Comey’s testimony portrays Trump as a domineering chief executive who made his FBI director deeply uncomfortable over the course of nine separate private conversations, beginning with their first meeting in early January before Trump was sworn into office....

...Comey writes with almost novelistic detail about his interactions with the president, describing a call on Jan. 27 around lunchtime inviting him to dinner.

“It was unclear from the conversation who else was going to be at the dinner, although I assumed there would be others,” Comey wrote. “It turned out to be just the two of us, seated at a small oval table in the center of the Green Room. Two Navy stewards waited on us, only entering the room to serve food and drinks.”

The president began the conversation, Comey wrote, by asking him whether he wanted to stay on as FBI director, “which I found strange because he had already told me twice in earlier conversations that he hoped I would stay, and I had assured him that I intended to.”

The president replied, according to Comey, that lots of people wanted his job and “he would understand if I wanted to walk away.”

Comey’s instincts, he wrote, were that both the setting and the conversation “meant the dinner was, at least in part, an effort to have me ask for my job and create some sort of patronage relationship. That concerned me greatly, given the FBI’s traditionally independent status in the executive branch.”....

So, first Trump meets Comey in a face to face dinner--no others invited. (RED FLAG)
Then Trump asks Comey if he plans to serve his full term as FBI Director. (RED FLAG) The FBI director is a 10 year position--it's a unique position in Washington. Comey answers "YES".
Trump says he needs complete loyalty--he expects loyalty. (RED FLAG) Comey answers with silence. Awkward silence.
The conversation continues with various subjects and circles BACK to loyalty. (RED FLAG) Comey answers "You will always get honesty from me." Trump replies "HONEST LOYALTY". (RED FLAG)

Translation Trump: Will you do what I tell you, Jim? Will you cover for me?

Anyone who thinks that conversation was something OTHER than a threatening demand isn't working on all cylinders.

AND here's the "THING".

Intelligence officials refuse to say whether Trump asked them to influence FBI's Russia inquiry. Two senior U.S. intelligence officials repeatedly refused to say Wednesday whether President Trump had asked them to intervene or to publicly downplay the FBI investigation into supposed ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, and Adm. Michael S. Rogers, head of the National Security Agency, instead told a Senate committee that they didn't feel pressured to do anything improper.

The carefully-worded denials appeared aimed at drawing a distinction between being asked by Trump to influence an ongoing investigation, and feeling pressured to do so.

From CNN at 12:05 PDT today:

Quote:
Fired FBI Director James Comey will say Thursday that President Trump asked him to end the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, according to a copy of his opening remarks posted online.

"He then said, 'I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go,'" Comey said in remarks posted on the web site of the Senate intelligence committee. "I replied only that 'he is a good guy.' (In fact, I had a positive experience dealing with Mike Flynn when he was a colleague as Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency at the beginning of my term at FBI.) I did not say I would 'let this go.'"

Comey is scheduled to give his testimony before the Senate committee Thursday.
