Is Democracy on Life Support?

Donald Trump was elected president of the United States a year ago this week.

His ascendancy in US politics has made visible a culture of cruelty, a contempt for civic literacy, a corrupt mode of governance and a disdain for informed judgment that has been decades in the making.

It also points to the withering of civic attachments, the undoing of civic culture, the decline of public life, the erosion of any sense of shared citizenship and the death of commanding visions.

As he visits Asia this week in a trip that those in the White House, as usual, feared could careen spectacularly off the rails, the world will once again witness how Trump's history of unabashed racism and politics of hate is transformed into a spectacle of fear, divisions and disinformation.

Under Trump, the plague of mid-20th century authoritarianism and apocalyptic populism have returned in a unique American form. A year later, people in Asia and the rest of the world are watching, pondering how such a dreadful event and retreat from democracy could have taken place.

How could a liberal society give up its ideals so quickly? What forces have undermined education to the extent that a relatively informed electorate allowed such a catastrophe to happen in an alleged democracy?

George Orwell's "ignorance is strength" motto in 1984 has materialized in the Trump administration's attempts not only to rewrite history, but also to obliterate it. What we are witnessing is not simply politics but also a reworking of the very meaning of education both as an institution and as a broader cultural force.

Trump, along with Fox News, Breitbart and other right-wing cultural institutions, echoes one of totalitarianism's most revered notions: That truth is a liability and ignorance a virtue.

Democracy on Life Support: Donald Trump's First Year in Office

Now...before anyone jumps on the author and website---YES! Truthout IS a liberal website and it's a little radical. BUT.....We've had several posts about the dumbing down of America. The divisiveness of Donald Trump. The cultural shifts. The billionaire swamp. The attack on public education. The privilege of whites, men, wealth. The redefining of Christianity and the stereotyping of Muslims. The piece addresses these issues.

A year ago we watched as Donald J Trump became the heir to the presidential throne. Trump promised so much: unity, greatness, wealth, jobs, healthcare.
This country is more divided than ever. This country's greatness is debatable. The middle class is disappearing. Healthcare has not changed. Jobs? Unemployment? America is doing well. So at least we have that. But the pervasive cruelty mentioned above becomes more evident every day....in this so-called Christian nation.

The monied interests in this country are trying to take over completely and they are using the Republican Party to try to achieve those ends. The white nationalists are also using the Republican Party to push their hatred and bigotry.

Last night, the Republican candidate for Governor got his ass kicked because he campaigned on Civil War statues and fearmongering of Hispanic gangs. In the legislature, a transexual candidate beat a Republican who unsuccessfully tried to get a discriminatory bathroom law passed in Virginia. Hate always loses in the end.

RESIST !!!

The "monied interests" are well encamped in the Democrat Party. Phil Murphy, governor-elect of New Jersey, is a Goldman-Sachs man.

The "monied interests" oppose Trump.

Not necessarily. His primary oppostion comes from bourgeois liberals. The far-right, ultra-conservative bourgeoisie support him 100%. There is a split among the elite.

There are probably more millionaires in Congress that reside in the Democrat party than the Republican party.

List of executive actions by Barack Obama
Page issues
United States presidents issue executive orders to help officers and agencies of the executive branch manage the operations within the federal government itself. Presidential memoranda are closely related, and like executive orders have the force of law on the Executive Branch, but are generally considered less prestigious. Presidential memoranda do not have an established process for issuance or publication; unlike executive orders, they are not numbered. A Presidential determination is a determination resulting in an official policy or position of the executive branch of the United States government. Presidential determinations may involve any number of actions, including setting or changing policy, or any number of other exercises of executive power.[1]

A Presidential proclamation is a statement issued by a president on a matter of public policy. They are generally defined as, "the act of causing some state matters to be published or made generally known. A written or printed document in which are contained such matters, issued by proper authority; as the president's proclamation, the governor's, the mayor's proclamation."[2] An Administrative Order (I.E.: findings, letters, orders) can be issued.[3] Administrative orders are published in the Federal Register in forms other than those of executive orders, or proclamations, have been denominated as administrative orders when reproduced in CFR Title 3 compilations."[3] A research guide by the National Archives defined administrative orders as "unnumbered signed documents through which the President of the United States conducts the administrative operations of the Federal Government" which "include but are not limited to memoranda, notices, determinations, letters, and messages."[4] A Presidential notice or a Presidential Sequestration Order can also be issued.[5][6]

Executive orders, Presidential memoranda, Presidential determinations, Presidential proclamations, Administrative orders, Presidential notices, and Presidential Sequestration Orders are compiled by the Office of the Federal Register (within the National Archives and Records Administration) and are printed by the Government Printing Office. They are published daily, except on federal holidays. A free source of these documents is the Federal Register, which contains government agency rules, proposed rules, and public notices.[7] There are no copyright restrictions on the Federal Register; as a work of the U.S. government, it is in the public domain.[8]

(List of President Obama's Signing Statements - Signing statements signed by President Obama during his time in office.)

Listed below are executive orders numbered 13489–13764 and Presidential memoranda signed by United States President Barack Obama. There are an additional 1186 Presidential proclamations that are not included here, but some of which are on WikiSource.

Trump is evil as sin, the Devil is waiting.

Trump is a threat to the leftist agenda, which leftists believe is the only true democracy.

The rich seem to be divided on which party they prefer, but the majority of people hate both parties as even CNN's pollster has to acknowledge lately:
Poll: Views of Democratic Party hit lowest mark in 25 years - CNNPolitics

So for me, the OP question should not be whether America has lost democracy now because of Trump, but whether it ever existed or was lost long ago! Because if most people despise both ruling parties in a governing system that allows two political parties to run the entire process, then there is no democracy! Democracy for the rich doesn't count!
