How many people are busy with their own problems and crises in life, and look up to find the political debates don't mention issues they care about...which are primarily economic issues that affect their lives directly.

That I agree with! Only on a forum like this will you see such ire and debate over wedding cakes. The bottom line is the economy. How is your paycheck, your job. That is what it comes down to. Are you better off now than you was back when ever.

I have nothing against news media covering a debate over gay wedding cakes and similar issues that don't affect the majority of people, but the over-emphasis of these kinds of issues tells me that the players in the liberal vs conservative media game are in the infotainment business/not the real news business, and if they keep their audiences focused on trivia and celebrity news(include the royals for christ's sakes on this one!), then they have excuses for keeping the spotlight off of the real hard news:
-the human catastrophe that is progressing towards mass starvation in Yemen -caused directly by the new Saudi king who wants to be a wartime leader too like the big boys....and indirectly caused by the US for supplying and maintaining the hardware

-mass detention policies on the US southern border, that has already disappeared 1400 children that neither ICE nor FBI and other agencies have kept track of...only now making the news cycle because video and audio recordings of young children separated from their mothers and fathers have blown up so big on the internet that it pushed aside the usual Russiagate stories....though I suspect CNN et al. will just wait for this brushfire to die down a little and go back to their usual bullshit

-the Poor People's Campaign...completely ignored by self-proclaimed liberal MSM mouthpieces and the so called "newspapers of record" - Washington Post and NY Times...don't even notice their march on Washington even after march leaders- Rev. William Barber and Rev. Liz Theoharis were assaulted and manhandled during arrests that ripped off and ruined their vestments....even with that, it's still not on the Liberal Top 40

-extinction level warnings from environmental news sources around the world declaring that marine mammals and most fish will be extinct in the world's oceans at the end of this century from the combined catastrophes of trillions of tons of plastics residues and warming oceans | the domesticated cow will be the largest land animal left on dry land by the end of the century also | none of the nations who have signed on to the Paris Climate Accord (including Canada) are doing any more about reducing carbon outputs than the climate change-denying US and Australians! Like the Rio Summit of 1992, it's just a game of looking concerned and looking busy with a problem while the house burns down around us!

-all of the imperial regime change wars...every one one of them is either enthusiastically or tacitly approved by both liberals and conservatives, even though these same wars have directly led to mass deaths, depopulations and mass exodus to Europe and America.....yes, this horrible story that even the Trump Administration is trying to dodge, we are learning what we already knew: most of these children being separated from their parents, are fleeing Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador! The playground of the CIA...and in the case of Honduras, the subject of one of Hillary's regime change initiatives to remove a democratically elected government....what goes around, comes around!

I don't have these issues in the order of importance I would like, but just off the top of my head, these come to mind as issues that range from totally ignored to mostly ignored and misreported in the standard MSM narratives. But, everyone likes to debate gay wedding cakes it seems, because few people's lives are changed or affected whichever way the issue falls!
