Trump and nuclear war

Personally, I do not think we have ever had a worse president. Trump's fear-mongering speech last night has increased my sense of urgency that we dimish his powers as much as possible. I think increasing our nuclear capability and reactivating the nuclear arms race is the worst thing we could possibly do.

Beyond War is an international organization that has opposed nuclear weapons for many years and if we all support this organization and other efforts to end the threat of nuclear war, perhaps human reason can prevail over emotions and fear?

Quote:
Who We Are - World Beyond War . . .

We strive to replace a culture of war with one of peace in which nonviolent means of conflict resolution take the place of bloodshed.

While public opinion has moved against war, we intend to seize this moment to crystallize that opinion into a movement that spreads awareness that war can be ended, that its ending is hugely popular, that war should be ended as it endangers rather than protects — and harms rather than benefits — and that there are steps we can and must take to move toward war’s reduction and abolition.

War is not ending on its own. It is being confronted by popular resistance. But too often that resistance takes the form of denouncing one war as unacceptable (in contrast to theoretical good wars), or opposing a war because it leaves a military ill-prepared for other wars, or rejecting a weapon or a tactic as less proper than others, or opposing wasteful military spending in favor of greater efficiency (as if the entire enterprise were not an economic waste and a moral abomination). Our goal is to support steps away from war and to spread understanding of them as just that — steps in the direction of war’s elimination.
Which side are you on, the side of death or side of life?

The very last thing we should do is restart the nuclear race.

Drang before Sturm

Certainly @ the point that candidate Trump was trying to discuss the US nuclear triad (maybe a year & a half ago), he seemed to have no idea about basic nuclear doctrine. I doubt that he has either the inclination nor the attention span to remedy that lack - he seems much more focused on his daily Twitterstorm & getting even with anyone who dares to question his judgment - on whatever topic.

I know Democrats have to focus on important Trump issues like: is he having a secret affair in the White House with Nikki Haley? Or did he have an affair and payed hush money to a porn star? But it would be nice if they could give a little attention to an issue that threatens all life on Earth....and I'm including you Bernie on this one! Where are you on any foreign policy issues?
Thanks from Athena

Bill Clinton shut down the Savannah River Plant which was the only place Tritium was made in the US. Tritium puts the bang in the buck of a thermonuke. I hope Trump starts up Tritium production again. Tritium has a half life of three years and a thermonuke needs the Tritium Plug changed every three years. Wackenhut was security at Savannah River Plant.

Didn't someone like, really smart say words to the effect of "why have nuclear weapons if you don't use them?"

Fear is a tyrant. Those who partner with fear for the power of fear, are tyrants, if you like what that tyrant is doing for you or not.

And how many countries have the capability of making tritium?

Nope, still in production. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tritium

"Production history[edit]

"According to the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research report in 1996 about the U.S. Department of Energy, only 225 kg (496 lb) of tritium has been produced in the United States since 1955. Since it continually decays into helium-3, the total amount remaining was about 75 kg (165 lb) at the time of the report.[3][15]

"Tritium for American nuclear weapons was produced in special heavy water reactors at the Savannah River Site until their closures in 1988. With the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) after the end of the Cold War, the existing supplies were sufficient for the new, smaller number of nuclear weapons for some time.

"The production of tritium was resumed with irradiation of rods containing lithium (replacing the usual control rods containing boron, cadmium, or hafnium), at the reactors of the commercial Watts Bar Nuclear Generating Station in 2003–2005 followed by extraction of tritium from the rods at the new Tritium Extraction Facility[16] at the Savannah River Site beginning in November 2006.[17] Tritium leakage from the rods during reactor operations limits the number that can be used in any reactor without exceeding the maximum allowed tritium levels in the coolant.[18]"
