U.S. Boy Scouts to change name in appeal to girls

Quote:

The Boy Scouts of America will drop "boy" from the name of its signature program for older youths as it seeks to widen its appeal to girls, the 108-year-old organization said on Wednesday.

I would have genuinely preferred to see them come up with a program in cooperation with the Girl Scouts that is the equivalent of an eagle scout.

I remember being a Girl Scout and wishing that the Girl Scouts had something like an Eagle Scout and the Order of the Arrow.
Thanks from imaginethat, Panther, Lyzza and 1 others

I 100% agree. I have daughters and they have gone to these "girl power" camps where it is all girls and they do all kinds of shit like kung fu, obstacle courses, and just talk. The biggest thing was just being around other young girls growing up in the same environment in the same time. Toss in a few young boys in the mix and it completely changes the program. Same goes for boy scouts.

It's no horror, but there is some value to certain unisex environments.

Young people, from about 9 forward will start to become self conscious about the way to (they believe) behave in front of the opposite sex. Scouts is one of the few environments where that didn't exist.

If a girl wishes to attain the level of Eagle Scout, more power to her.

I guess, for me anyway, this is a bit of a complicated issue.

I feel as though that this is mostly about the Eagle Scout status that is earned by Boy Scouts, but there is no real equivalent for girls in the Girl Scouts. I remember some of the older guys involved in my group who were running it talking about how the Boy Scouts tried to combine with the Girl Scouts to form one single organization, but I believe something about the cookie sales, believe it or not, made the whole thing fall apart. So I guess that this is just them trying to do it anyway. I suppose that girls should be allowed to become Eagle Scouts, at least give them the chance to try. It'll encourage good behavior and an outdoors spirit in women, who I feel are more inclined to be caught up in the material.

But what I don't like, I guess, is that I feel like that boys and girls need time to themselves. I feel as though that I spent a lot of time around girls in school and at home that when I was at the scouts, it was good to just be with other guys. Not sure why, but just a feeling. Maybe one needs to encourage "better behavior" but I don't see why the need for being with other men without the presence of women is wrong.

That's why there should have been a collaboration between the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts to create a girls' Eagle Scout program.

Becoming an Eagle Scout requires service and leadership. These are traits that are important for both sexes.

Just being a scout should be enough to introduce girls to outdoorsman activities. You don't have to achieve Eagle Scout for that. I developed a love for hiking in the woods from my time in the scouts.
Thanks from Lyzza

Yeah, destroying a tradition is the name of progressiveness is always worthwhile. Well, maybe not for the Boy Scouts but for the progressive diversity crowd it's a win, win.
