Women Owe More in Student Debt Than Men. You Can Blame That on the Patriarchy.

Quote:
For at least the last decade, candidates for elected office have touted plans to make higher education more affordable, and progressive politicians have put forth bold policies to address the problem. But few have been explicit about its gender breakdown. Women bear a disproportionate brunt of the national student debt, and that has and continues to cost them billions in lost wealth and missed opportunities.

Of course, some of that burden stems from the fact that more women enroll in American universities than men do. At the undergraduate level, women account for 56 percent of all students. But even that number doesn’t explain the share of debt women owe. As AAUW senior vice president of public policy and research Deborah Vagins notes, just one factor can explain the the stark differential: the wage gap.

We’ve insisted for decades now that women pursue advanced education, the better to secure good salaries and more skilled work. And that’s great, Vagins adds. But after graduation and at the federal level, the nation hasn't done enough to ensure that those women are compensated at the same rates as men. The wage gap kicks in as soon as women enter the job market, which means that, from the start, they have fewer resources to pay back loans, they pay them off more slowly, and they rack up more interest in the process. The effects snowball, Vagins suggests.

Both my daughters graduated from college debt free..

we saved for their college and reimbursed them based on their grades. 4.0 100% 3.5 95% 3.0 80% 2.0 50% below 0% reimbursement.

They also were REQUIRED to hold a 40 hour / week job while in school. (youngest daughter it was 30 hours/week she earned a scholarship for music which required her to commit to performances.

They Graduated College debt free, my youngest took her college savings and purchased her first house a 850 SqFt 2 bedroom house, what she saved from her working she paid cash for the house.

My oldest daughter took a tour of Europe and went to work for Deutsche Bank in Risk management in Germany and purchased a small condo in Bremerhaven

I also graduated from college debt free.

I'm not foolish - nor arrogant - enough to think that my privileged upbringing is the experience that most people live through.
Thanks from Lyzza and right to left

That is great.. we just taught our children to live debt free (with exception of a short term mortgage) we were not privileged we just worked for what we have.

if you were able to save the hundreds of thousands of dollars it would take to send several children through college, they were raised in a privileged background.

I don't doubt that you worked. So did my father. He worked his ass off. And gave us a very nice life.

You can't seriously believe the majority of people inthe U.S. can afford to save that kind of money.

No, they were not raised privileged, we saved because they had to sacrifice other things.

I saved for college by working farms (jobs like taking a bale of hay putting it on a truck then putting it in a barn for each bail I got 1 cent.)

My daughters were required to get jobs at age 14. Baby sitting, fast food, working for Great American working up sales for College Students that sold books to pay for their education.

My Daughters were Exchange students, they had to work jobs, (My oldest sold 4,000 candy bars to pay for her exchange student costs where she lived in Australia for 6 months and atteneded school).

my grandmother said "There is a 4 step cure for poverty, W O R K"

They never got an allowance they earned a commission. They did their Chores they received money, if they didn't compete their chores they got paid for the chores they did the ones they did not they had to pay me and her mom back if we had to do them.

So to review:
*Parents help daughters LESS with college expenses--WHY?
*More women go to college--56%
*The Gender Pay Gap--women earn 81 cents for every dollar earned by a man.
*The Interest Rate due to pay gap--men earn more expendable income allowing them to repay their student debt faster.

There are some issues that were not covered.
*More women than ever are going after advanced degrees: Masters and PhD
*Women earned the majority of doctoral degrees in 2016 for the 8th straight year. 135 to 100.
*Advanced degrees are much more expensive.
Thanks from Kate, RNG and Lyzza

Why should parents pay for anyone's college it is nice if they do but why do YOU EXPECT IT.

Gender pay gap there is no gap except in Government jobs.

Remember Obama only paid his women staff ~3/5 what he paid his male staff

Same for Hillary..

https://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/08/u...-scrutiny.html

The Obama 3/5 compromise

in the private sector why women earn less (not paid less/hour) is because they miss work ~28% more often than men.
Thanks from roastpork and Sabcat
