Doomsday Code

From Rabbit @ Bowland Central...

Quote:

Did you see Tony Robinson's "The Doomsday Code" on C4? (It's on catch-up for those of you who have it)

It centres on the disturbing belief of so-called "end timers" not only that the book of Revelation is the literal word of god, but also that it is their duty to ensure that apocalyptic prophecy is fulfilled, thus making it a self-fulfilling prophecy regardless of its origin.

Most worrying are the activities of western christians in the Middle East, 'facilitating' the end-times by directly causing prophecies to be fulfilled, including deliberately trying to provoke war between Jews and Arabs.

If a prophecy is valid, then it doesn't matter what any self-appointed vanguard of the apocalypse does. If they're trying to make it happen, surely that betrays a lack of faith in the prophecy?

Turns out their motivation is the belief that they are bringing on the "rapture", which isn't a biblical concept and is actually a fairly recent invention. There's also some serious doubt as to the authenticity of Revelation's claimed authorship and Robinson convincingly challenges its inclusion in the bible.

What the documentary says to me - and bear in mind it was written and presented by a christian - is "never mind the anti-christ, it's christians who are going to destroy the world. Deliberately!"

Religion provides us a multiplicity of intrinsic perils.

But there may be none more perilous than the divine imprimatur.
