I remember it when I was in high school. That was in late 80's. Waaaaay slow though. Everything we did was text based, not enough bandwidth for graphics.

My wife and I bought a new PC in the PX in Germany in 1990 that was state of the art... the package deal came with a 9 pin printer and a dinky little monitor... so cool, didn't need a boot floppy to start the thing but it didn't have a modem... costs a little over $1700.00.

I worked part time at the Army Community Services doing email for spouses of soldiers deployed to Desert Storm and to send an email with an external modem was equal to installing a complex program on a new computer today... I didn't even know the Internet existed.

I remember those. I just bought an off lease 3.2 Ghz D530 tower for $60 total. Damn.

Yeah it was called "ARPANET" it was mostly only used by military first and foremost and universities had some relay's across the country (Stanford University was one of them). It was not commercialized, until the mid 90's. My cousin wanted my dad to "invest" in it it in 1992. Needless to say they though he was joking and I would probably be going to college for free right now if he did ;-O.

Yes it WAS the best decade hands down technologically and maybe even culturally, although all of the hippies from the 60's grew up and turned into squares on Wall Street, but that's beyond the scope of this thread haha.

On the subject the C programming language, which was invented in 1978 by Dennis Ritchie @ Bell Labs just turned 32 years old recently. It is the STILL the most popular language in the world for writing software in. Functional languages are making a comeback! It's good for me, because I have no absolutely no use for object-oriented paradigms that everyone uses these days. If you programmed with C you will see why you love it or hate it especially since everything in the Unix world is written in it. The BASH shell in Unix was also written in 1987 by Steve Bourne so this clearly true.
