what if it's life not based on carbon and water?
would we know it was life?

Welcome to the world of the science fiction of my youth.

I lost interest when it morphed into mostly fantasy crap.

Edit: Of interest, when I first started graduate school my research advisor tried to push me into studying silicon, a subject he and his other students had followed for years. He also studied sulfur. If you will recall, silicon is the member of the periodic table in the same family as carbon, but heavier and the same is true of sulfur.

One of his motivation was that there were very many planets which were too hot for water so perhaps there might be silicon based life that some how utilized a sulfur containing water replacement.

I didn't believe, wasn't interested and went in a different direction.

Yes, Newton's Law of Universal gravitation also tells us that the gravitational force (or pull) between two bodies (like planets) is proportional to the product of their masses, and inversely proportional to the distance separating them.

Also yes, I am indeed a high school physics teacher.

Good point! I noted that in an earlier post.

Another good point! There could be methane breathing living heat engines living on said planets.

A bit of trivia, to be able to view dinosaurs on Earth from 65 million light years away would require a lens over four light years in diameter or 25.9 trillion miles.

It is the same human arrogance that says man is made in gods image that thinks life outside our sphere would resemble ours in any way.

I bet next you are going to say that the earth isn't the center of the universe.
