One of humanity's most important inventions: the bag

I have never seen any mention of the bag as being one of humanity's most important inventions. If you look at the impact it has on humanity, it probably beats the wheel and the discovery of how to make fire.

It is the most obvious, everyday item we use all the time; it's right under our noses.

Imagine how things changed when human beings went from being able to carry only what we could directly hold with our hands (or maybe with our mouths by biting it to hold it) to being able to throw a bunch of random items into bags and tote them around.

By bags I don't mean just paper or plastic bags; I mean anything that fits the characteristics of something with an opening and having the properties of a container without an overall rigid shape or body, so for example one made of cloth weaved together or leather would be included.

I suppose it could be generalized to containers, such as jars, boxes, baskets, etc. I think these items in general are all up there with the wheel, fire, knife/axe, nails, horse & buggy, plow, etc.

While I'm at it, how about the concept of rope (and strands) - as something made from lines or cords, that can be used to pull things, hang things, bind things together, etc. I'm not sure if rope as an object really qualifies as an invention given that human beings probably got the "idea" from vines or other things that can be found in nature, but I do think that the knot and techniques for making rope stronger, such as by twisting or braiding strands together, certainly do qualify as inventions.
