I'm in a real university town - five universities here, including Yale. So our library is very busy and active. But, I'm sure the surrounding communities are not the same way.

I dislike videos because I can read way faster than people can speak. Videos are an inefficient method of information transfer.

And audios, I am not an auditory learner.

I prefer the written word in most cases.

Maybe not, it appears to be a real phenomenon.

So it isn't just me.

I still like printed words. I can go over a passage I wasn't sure about, I can Google a word, phrase or pop culture reference I don't know. With videos, you can pause it and do so, but it seems to me to disrupt the thought flow.

And I think it is another example of dumbing things down.

Facebook says it will be 'all video' in 5 years as people abandon text - Trending - CBC News
I ruin books when I read them because I dog ear the page instead of using a book mark when I am done reading for the night.

Same here. I prefer the written word and "still" photographs over video. I don't even own a "movie camera. or video camera if you prefer.

Death of the Printed Word

We have been transitioning to a more functionally illiterate, image-based culture rather than a print-based culture. It is very dangerous and, in fact, exactly what Ray Bradbury warned of in his classic book "Fahrenheit 451"

I mean seriously, WTF???

If Betsy De VOID gets her way as Sec of Ed, there won't be a reader left on the planet....but I think that's what the GOP would prefer.

I read something awhile back that if (and when) this current civilization gets basically wiped out with few survivors after a man made or natural catastrophe, scientists and archeologists a thousand years later will have few records of our time because everything now, down to pictures is stored on computers and mobile devices destroyed and unretrievable.

There will probably be no need for books in the next ten years because everyone has a mobile device and can sell books on that platform. Why have law books when someone can look up case law online? Or again any book at all? I think ecologically it will be wonderful to save trees from the needs of paper, but when mankind pulls the trigger on the bombs or a meteor hits, what will our decendents be left with? After three generations we are forgotten anyway, so maybe the question is moot.
Thanks from Sabcat
