Death of the Printed Word

It has seemed to me that for a long time videos are taking over. This forum, news sites, my favorite NASCAR.com and many more sites are going more and more to videos rather than stories that actual printed words. But is that me becoming a "You kids get off my lawn" type?

Maybe not, it appears to be a real phenomenon.

Facebook says it will be 'all video' in 5 years as people abandon text

In August 1981, a single company changed the way an entire generation got its music, news, and views of the world when it launched with the song Video Killed the Radio Star, declaring radio dead.

MTV and its novel, 24/7 music video channel format went on to become a juggernaut force of culture throughout the '80s, leading a shift in media consumption habits among youth that, rather uniquely, couldn't be credited to a new type of communication technology.

But there's more change to come for users, based on what the company's executives are saying — and things don't look good for the written word as Facebook's own, more subtle Video Killed the Radio Star moment hangs nebulously over the entire web.

The 'decline of text'

Nicola Mendelsohn, Facebook's vice-president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, was asked about what the network would look like in five years in terms of content, while speaking at Fortune's Most Powerful Women International Summit in London on Tuesday.

"We're seeing a year-on-year decline of text," she told the audience. "If I was having a bet, I'd say video, video, video."

So it isn't just me.

I still like printed words. I can go over a passage I wasn't sure about, I can Google a word, phrase or pop culture reference I don't know. With videos, you can pause it and do so, but it seems to me to disrupt the thought flow.

And I think it is another example of dumbing things down.

I just fucking HATE that. Have people become so lazy, so ill-educated that they cannot even express themselves adequately with the written word?
I mean seriously, WTF???

You are too humble. I don't think "pseudo" should be in that statement.

It all started when the reich wing of America decided to promote the agenda that being educated and/or an intellectual was an elitist or negative thing.

So we have a proudly defiant ignorant majority who can't read or write. It's why so many forums are populated with people over 45.

I recently went to the public library to look for some old books I was interested in. Not many people there.

I found one of the books I was looking for. I was irritated to find the other book I wanted was only available via the Internet as an audio file.
Thanks from Jimmyb, RNG and coke
