Off the top, whenever I see any story about a "study" or "scientific study" the first thing I look for is what kind of research are they trying to draw conclusions from, because very few..even major news sources these days actually employ science journalists like they used to have on staff in the past..to look at and offer up a brief story explaining some scientific finding to a general audience. Nowadays, most of the research is profit-motivated by companies working on an angle...especially promoting new drugs and medical treatments.

Anyway, what I find is:
Quote:
States such as New Jersey, where a lot of people use bad language, were found to rank highly on the State Integrity Index, whereas Utah and other places where bad language is a relative rarity saw higher levels of fraud or similar offences.......The researchers also examined the Facebook postings of 75,000 people, where a similar correlation was observed.
So, the author or editor writes a sensationalistic headline to a story that raises a couple of red flags about how they reached this conclusion connecting honesty and foul language:
1. a state-by-state comparison of fraud with some not fully described report on use of profanity or foul language. Even if true, what other factors besides language and honesty would affect a comparison of two different states?
2. Facebook! For Christ's sake. I haven't gone on Facebook in years after deactivating it early on, and I'm not impressed with what I've been hearing about this platform ever since. The last thing I would trust Facebook for on any subject is accuracy and integrity!

But, even if their findings are accurate, it should be at this point where a philosopher or anthropologist are consulted about whether honestly is an unmitigated good and has no downside.

I recall reading something from a cultural anthropologist a few years back on theories about the rise of higher cognitive functioning like reasoning and persuasion skills, and though primitive hunter-gatherers in the few remaining places like the Amazon Valley tend to be honest to the point of shockingly blunt about what's on their mind, that level of honesty has to diminish or get scaled back as groups become larger and people start having contact with people they don't know directly or know very well, and have to calculate how others might interpret their meaning and intentions....conservatives can call this the origins of "political correctness!"

Could you elaborate on that point a little! Is it just about boorish louts? If you were once active here...apparently while I was on hiatus...it'd be nice to think you might find it worthwhile to pick up where you left off...and it's not like this or any other discussion forum for that matter, has too many female participants...whether "Athena" is your real name or chosen because of your admiration for the Greek goddess of wisdom, art and literature.

I'd like to see at least one more socialist...there are many out there now, but I'd like more variety of opinion beyond the standard Dem/Repub presentation, and more threads on usually ignored topics outside of politics. Most people are falling in to social media silos where they spend all their time talking and listening to likeminded and never see other points of view. Forums are the last place online that can't be scripted or steered by Facebook, Twitter etc. to meet their own commercial ends.

I was home with my mother who I love very much but is also fun to screw with, because it pisses her off to my amusement (and hers).

We were watching Dr. Phil (I like Dr. Phil) and there was a story about a really evil foul mouthed brat who insulted her mother and called her a "whore".

Mother "Do you know what I would have done if you called me that?"

Me "I don't know whore, what?"

She gave me a look. Was still funny, and although she knew it was completely in jest, a small part of her still didn't like it. We did have conversations about too much swearing and "dirty words" on television. SHIT is ok to say in the home, but FUCK is basically forbidden. She says she hated all swearing, I countered that swearing and crudeness can be done badly or well.

My peeve is music in public places and on television. I can't stand it. I understand bars and places like that, but stores and restaurants it annoys me no end. Music to me is very personal, as in everyone has different tastes. I like the band ACDC, but I do not want to sit in a restaurant with my folks where ACDC is being played. Or having to sit and be forced to listen to Rod Stewart, Stevie Knicks or rap without benefit of tearing my ears off.
