I was going to say I wish there were some hard numbers, but that would be impossible to get. One of my major bitches with modern N American lifestyle is, IMO, the total dissolution of the line between want and need.

One of the worst things we of the baby boomer generation did to our kids is made them expect too much for free. What's wrong with one six year old Ford for many families. Look at the size of the average house in even 1980 and today. We managed to become functioning adults without homicidal tendencies even though we didn't have a room of our own as kids.

And so on.

It would be possible for a lot of people if their expectations changed.

At some point in material time, the "American Dream" that every generation will enjoy more than the previous generation, it had to come to an end. Too many people for a while now have had more stuff than they knew what to do with.

Closets, garages, u-store-it units, freaking stuff everywhere, so much stuff, you buy stuff on sale cause you need one but find out when ya get home that you already had one hiding in all the stuff you can't keep track of.

Often, the ones with the most stuff are the ones demanding the loudest for the right to accumulate more stuff.

The earth is finite. The population is steadily increasing. Where do things go? Does it end, and if so how does it end?

Women and men split the financial responsibilities of marriage and family - and most women take the household duties upon themselves alone because the man refuses to engage.

Not true in many cases, mine included, my wife and I share in the things to be done. I have no problems doing anything around the house I actually enjoy turning on a playlist of music and having at it!

They don't "feel the need" to have both parents work - we live in a country where the government gives all the advantages to the top 1% of the nations and says "fuck you" to the rest of the nation, making it a requirement of existence for most families to have two income earners.

It's not quite rocket science.
Yes and why do they want to income earners?

True. I read something the other day: We spend the first half of our lives accumulating "things" and the second half figuring out how to get rid of them.

Living in a retirement community we see it every day. Most of us have downsized. We're offering up our "stuff" to our kiddos--living pretty frugally since we don't need much else.

I have noticed that the Millennials think differently. They/some don't seem to be as wrapped up in "things" or big homes or fancy cars. Our boys are Gen X but they just aren't interested in all the glam and bling.
Maybe things are changing...?

Excellent points. This is why we need socialism - just use stuff when you need it, then give it back to the community. I had to clear my Mother's house and am trying to get rid of all the junk here so that the kids aren't faced with such a dreadful process with ours.
Thanks from Clara007
