How do you understand power and being powerful? How about those rebellions in Rome that helped tear Rome apart? Were the rebels acting on a concept of power? Might we see the same resistance in the US? Will such demonstrations of power make us stronger?
We are going to see a revolution. We are going to see the state confiscate all private property for the good of the public. We will see a strong political ruling class of elites to rule over the people and provide for them in accordance to their ability and need.

Well, it is manifestly not a democracy, even if some crazy liberals went and abolished slavery, but 'Plutocracy', surely, is nearer the mark?

Of course, we are becoming more and more a democracy as judicial, executive, and legislative decisions are being made based more on what is politically popular and not on what's best for the country.

Though, I suppose that point is debatable, but it's how I see it.

With all due respect to Daniel Kahneman and his theory of mind commonly known as Dual Process Theory today (in brief that our conscious rationalizing cortex-level processing goes on simultaneously with the lower level, emotionally-driven unconscious decisionmaking systems) has been accepted and developed by younger generations of psychological researchers....but none of this explains why democracy fails!

Democracy...whether we're talking about modern representative democratic systems of government, referendum-based decisionmaking or more traditional consensus-based systems can work effectively in egalitarian societies where everyone feels they are equally responsible and should have an equal say. However! It doesn't take a genius to notice that we live in a world where, if 161 men, known collectively as The Transnational Corporate Class "collectively manage $23.91 trillion in funds and operate in nearly every country in the world." , we're simply NOT equal! Who is the democratic political representative going to listen to? One of them or one of us?

Athena,

Thanks for posting this topic. A couple questions if you don't mind:

1. You seem fairly confident about what is required to be a good leader. Could you discuss the criteria you believe are necessary for earning that status?

2. How do you reach the conclusion that democracy is a political ideology as opposed to something else? I'm not suggesting you're entirely wrong, but I find the Greeks' description to be more correct: namely, that democracy is a particular arrangement of the political community.
Thanks from KillTheCarnage

why democracy fails

There is not even an attempt to have a real Democracy in the US. Also, I maintain that Democracy on such a large scale is not, in fact, the optimal mode of organization. Rather, Democracy works well in situations where the group involved is of similar abilities; however, when the range of abilities in the group varies significantly (which becomes more likely when introducing a larger group and many, various areas that must be addressed), then Meritocracy is superior. This is also why I support Worker Co-ops under certain conditions, while others it may fail.

The twilight of American culture / Morris Berman, c2000, W. W. Norton & Co., 973.92 Berm.

Subjects
• Popular culture -- United States.
• Corporations -- United States -- Sociological aspects.
• Mass society.
• Monastic and religious life -- Europe -- History -- Middle Ages, 600-1500.
• Education, Humanistic -- United States -- Philosophy.
• United States -- Civilization -- 1970-
• United States -- Social conditions -- 1980-

Length
• xiv, 205 pages ; index, chapter notes.

On US popular culture. Is it possible to soften the fall of civilization – maybe some variation on monasteries & copying documents as in the Middle Ages?

Well written, very interesting things to say about the state of popular culture & the prospects for the future in the West. Fairly bleak, with insights into possibilities to seed the future for a rising culture.

An excellent book, I recognized that I'd read it before. I read it again anyway, it's a pleasure to read good writing.

You've got FOUR PLUS BILLION DOLLARS lying around ?? Because THAT'S what CORPORATIONS, well the 1% that control those companies, poured into the last elections.

I seriously doubt any of that will happen. Why do you think that will happen?
