There is a slippery slope here. What about the way Islam views women's rights, gay rights and minorities' rights? Is criticizing Islam a hate crime? Can we criticize Muslims for their beliefs? Democrats and Republicans always criticize each other's beliefs and many genuinely hate each other.

Criticizing a Muslim belief is not a hate crime, doing so while beating a Muslim to death with a baseball bat is.
