Especially if you think that calling the Nazis "socialists" means the same thing as Bernie Sanders calling himself "socialist".

Obviously, the word "socialist" has a wide range of meanings, to the point where the word itself is almost meaningless, without further clarification.
Kinda the point

It's like he just pulled some random word out of a hat and is playing catch up w/ the definition.

That's very true. Socialism is an elusive concept dating all the way back to Plato. Karl Marx in fact considered himself a socialist. But there is a sharp difference between democratic or "evolutionary" socialism and Marxist or "revolutionary" socialism. Eduard Bernstein addressed this in 1900, pointing out the Marx's timetable was obsolete, and that western capitalism was showing a promising hope of reforming itself through the parliamentary process.

At the core is the idea that the government, however it gets into power, should take control of production of essential goods and services--food, housing, transportation, education, etc--either through direct requisition of the industries or through strict regulation. Hitler and the National Socialists chose strict regulation to serve the needs of his racial agenda. For Lenin it was seizure of everything in the name of the people, but essentially to serve Soviet goals of global domination. Either way it's a dictatorship where the press is strictly monitored and the people have no individual voice.

To some people reality itself is a myth. It doesn't fit the narrative they are selling.

PT Barnum understood these people very well.

He also proved the myth of capitalism.
