How Seattle’s New Tax to Fight Homelessness Could Ruin Its Economy

Quote:

In a shortsighted effort to fight homelessness, Seattle’s city council has approved a new employee “head tax” on companies based in the city. The policy pits growth and progress against each other in a zero-sum game that will do far more harm than good.

The head tax is exactly what it sounds like: a straight levy of $0.14 per hour per employee—about $275 a year for a full-time worker—targeting every business in Seattle with revenues of $20 million or more. The proposal’s backers aim to raise around $48 million per year to fund various affordable housing initiatives in order to combat homelessness and provide low-income families with affordable options in the city.

$.14 per hour, per employee.

Leftists are so funny.

Lets tax soda so to detour people from drinking soda. Lets tax cigarettes to stop people from smoking. Let's tax a business extra for every single employee they have.....to stop homelessness.

Damn, where did all the jobs go? Why do we have more homeless people then before?

We need federal funding.

Buy your response is what is expected. I mean what is 20 million dollars to a company like Amazon, right? Whi cares?
Thanks from webguy4

Everything is what you expected. Sounds to me like you need a new forum where things aren't so predictable.

Yes, the whole high tech sector will flee Seattle and head for East Bumfuck, Alabama
Where there are lots of people who want high paying jobs, a few of whom have even finished high school. Not to mention several with some junior college.

So what's your obsession with Seattle?

Failed restaurant venture there?

Seattle is one of the best places to live and work in the country.

That's because it's very Liberal, very educated, and people get paid well there.

A nightmare for low rent inheritance babies looking to do business on the cheap.

Better stay in Minnesota, and dodge taxes living in Wisconsin.

A liberal population and a benign climate are like magnets to the homeless.

I live in Vancouver now, very like Seattle. I came from Calgary. When it's 30 below, the homeless find someplace else to be. Plus, all the right wing oil types in Calgary are way less tolerant of street beggars.

Thus way more homeless in Vancouver than Calgary.

I would guess California and to a lesser extent Florida have a bunch too.
