Do US Citizens/Government Owe Veterans Anything?

I mean the trillions of $$$ spent on the military industrial complex is ridiculous, but then you get the enlisted returning from Afghanistan and Iraq wanting more. Veterans complain their pension isn't high enough or VA hospitals suck, yet are quick to point out they served their country. If you serve this country of your own free will knowing the risk then you really don't have grounds to ask or demand anything from government or taxpayers. No other career path expects such overwhelming compensation for a personal choice.

They owe them what they were promised when they signed up.

I am under the impression that recruiters are taught to lie their ass off in order to get people to sign up and most can tell they are lying.

One of these days humanity is going to need to grow up and stop murdering each other for disagreeing over some money or a piece of land.

I wholly believe that a global effort to rid ourselves of war would actually succeed. The problem is no government is mature enough to lead by example.

And when was the last time you were shot at, or blown up, at work ??

Ultimately you are correct, it is a voluntary employment contract. However, once you sign on the contract, you have zero control over where you go or what you are assigned to do. In the civilian world you can always quit your job if you don't like it. Not so with the military.

If you quit they will send armed men to drag you back and if you resist you can wind up in prison for a period far longer than your original employment contract. Not only are you locked in for the length of your original contract, under the "stop loss" program the military can extend your enlistment, months or even years at their discretion.

If you are injured "on the job" would you not expect your employer to compensate you and provide on going medical care for that injury ?? Especially if that injury left you unable to return to work or find other employment ??

How would you feel if your employer was requiring you to accept medical care from a system that might not be delivering the same level of care the rest of the country has access to ??
Thanks from onthefence

When they signed up they probably believed they could put their trust in the acumen of politicians, and to be backed up by their top brass when those same politicians make disastrous errors of judgment.

How wrong can you be?

Those that went to combat and were injured or killed we owe them/their families much more..

You see you can be an Atheist and I can be a Christian, freely because of their sacrifice.

How has their "sacrifice" protected that freedom?
