50 Years Ago Dr. Thomas Szasz Rocked The World of Psychiatry

The Difference Between A Disease and a Disorder

By Dr. Jeffrey Schaler

Assistant Professor of Justice, Law & Society

It is fifty years now since Thomas Szasz rocked the world of psychiatry by writing The Myth of Mental Illness: Foundations of a Theory of Personal Conduct. His work continues to have a profound impact on how we think about disease, behavior, liberty, justice, responsibility, and most important of all, what it means to be human. Szasz has shown us how the idea of mental illness is used by the state to deprive innocent people of freedom, and guilty persons of justice. Without the state involved, the medicalization of behavior means nothing.

Thomas Szasz suggests that governments have overstepped their bounds in labeling and prohibiting certain drugs as "dangerous" substances and incarcerating drug "addicts" in order to cure them. Szasz asserts that such policies scapegoat illegal drugs and the persons who use and sell them, and discourage the breaking of drug habits by pathologizing drug use as "addiction." Reaers will find in Szasz's arguments a cogent and committed response to a worldwide debate.

that wasnt quite what freud said, although he did talk about sex a lot.

szasz has said a lot of things, some of them are right, but he also talks a lot of crap. he is a fundamentalist, taking one idea and riding roughshod over every other idea with it.

i am not saying anything remotely resembling that. i have no idea what his political affiliations are and no idea what a "republican" view of mental health is.

Szasz has made many claims about the nature of mental health and mental illness. he cites a lot of evidence and shows the holes in opposing points of view. however he goes too far, stretching his ideas about health and illness to a degree that gets ridiculous. he is fundamentalist philosophically not politically.

perhaps it all comes from his desire to have sex with his mother.

At the end of the day a disease and a disorder are both undesireable.
