"The inquiry, which will focus on whether the government's methods to collect intelligence relating to the Trump campaign were lawful and appropriate, is separate from an investigation by the Justice Department's inspector general. The agency's watchdog is also examining the Russia probe's origins and Barr has said he expects the watchdog report to be done in May or June. "

It does confirm a pattern of Republican ideas about how government should function-- complain about Mueller investigation redundancy and cost, and then repeat the DOJ inspector general investigation. If we look to Benghazi for a pattern, I am sure the Republicans will continue until they find something ambiguous, and, if not, they will initiate another investigation....

If it were a special prosecutor some of what you post might be true. It isn't. The reason posited by the NYT for this is to investigate the spying by the Obama DOJ and to determine the extent of it while keeping the oversight needed to keep it from going postal like Mueller did. .
Thankfully Barr has stated that the IG investigation should be out soon. May or June. His findings will be useful in the new investigation not repeated. That's an indicator that Barr waited till the IG was done then assigned a prosecutor.
Your comment about the Reps goin on until they find something ambiguous is why the investigation is being kept under Barr. Mueller found no collusion after less than a year of investigating. He needed to throw the Dems a bone so he kept going till he released the report with a hint of obstruction. He should have stopped when his stated purpose was fulfilled.
OBTW Benghazi is not a valid analogy, that was congressional investigation basically incomplete, this is totally different.

There were at least 8 "incomplete" Benghazi investigations, 6 by Republicans who just did not seem to be able to find the answers they wanted, that is your argument?
So, essentially, Barr is appointing someone he can directly control and be sure that the intent of Trump is reflected in the investigation. Maybe if there were a serious interest in an objective analysis, Barr should appoint a Special Counsel, not a political operative. The additional redundancy will likely improve the chances that Barr can create an analysis that will satisfy Trump's need for a narrative of spying and harassment against his 2016 campaign.

"Finding", AKA manufacturing, answers isn't what they are supposed to do. Trying to compare congressional investigations with those conducted by the DOJ is classic apples and oranges. They both grow on trees and are round, that's where the resemblance ends.
Barrs motive is political? Not really, he has a legacy to protect too, just as all those at his level of office have. His findings have to stand the test of time. Remember Holders wingman comment? RFK spent more time in the Oval office than his brother the Prez did? His brother? Not political huh? Try to convince anyone with an IQ over room temp that that combo wasn't political. That's not news to anyone in govt that I know of.
It's obvious to the most casual observer that the extremes of political animals will not accept that these DOJ investigations will be honest and not serving Trump unless the outcome isn't in his favor.
Here's a great assessment and profile of John Durham the new investigator.

Just heard a great reason for the assignment of a prosecutor vs the IG. The IG is limited to current employees of the govt. John Durhams is not. Many people have left govt service since this all blew up. Investigating their actions etc is needed to get to the bottom of this.

Fine with me. Obviously the genesis of the investigation was the Russian interference in our election. I hope you are not denying they did this. There were some suspicious links between the Trumps and the Russians, which also warranted investigation.

Now, if that investigation was perverted by politics, it should be examined, but there should be no doubt an investigation into Russian interference was legitimate and, as facts proved, happened.

This is funny that the right thinks that justice can be pursued in the usa now.

FWI They have set the bar so low that there is no legal way possible for them to get information on this matter unless they first comply with the current investigations they are targets of.

Are there those who think they didn't? I don't know any. That's not the issue that caused the current investigations. The problem is that there is the appearance that the FBI et al used the flimsiest of evidence to obtain FISA warrants to start intrusive investigations of theTrump campaign. There are also some questions about the timeline of events that need clarification. Starting an investigation into the Russians activities and then shifting the focus to the Trump campaign by using possibly invalid FISA warrents is the issue.

Yup, now that the Mueller report is sitting on Nadlers chest it's time to stop any further investigations, real ones, not the political theater produced and directed by Nadler. Yup, got it.
