Born Again Christians on Social Media

I got this message (from a newsletter) in my email. The Facebook post discussed reminds me so much of some of the posts we read here from the "Christian" self righteous mighty. And the author's response articulates exactly my feelings about them ... without my gutter language.

Today I checked out my Facebook News Feed — which is something I sometimes do once a day but usually no more than once a week — and the first thing I saw nearly burned my eyes out of their sockets.

It was a very long status update from a high-school friend who, as far as I’ve seen during my infrequent News Feed checks, rarely posts anything.

It read…

WARNING….those of you that hate Christians, hate conservative minded people, get easily offended, hate and mock President Donald J. Trump, think that there is nothing wrong with gay marriage, think that it is okay to allow a child to choose which gender they identify with, disrespect military and have no respect for police officers, have a victim and slavery mentality, support open boarders [sic], support a democratic socialist lifestyle (and so forth)…you may want to unfriend me now because it is about to get worse! I hate what God hates and love what God loves. For some of you the lines seem to be blurred these days but it is not for me! I am giving you a heads up because I really do not care who I offend because I do not have time to coddle any of you! Time is short and I love you but I will speak the truth whether you like it or not. So please go ahead and unfriend me or else you might be exposed to the truth and get set free! If you want to have a civil discussion then by all means let us civilly discuss but I will no longer stand for any democratic socialist that tells me to go kill myself because I do not believe as they believe! I live in America and I will stand on my First Amendment Rights. I #WalkedAway years ago. I love you, thank you and have a wonderfully blessed day…#gettruth4yourself

As I read, I was waiting for “Gotcha.” Surely she was making fun of Trumpian trolls by talking just like one.

Sadly, she was dead serious. Instead of getting mad, I got disappointed. Had she not learned anything in high school English, like how to separate her thoughts into paragraphs, when to use “who” and when to use “whom,” and capitalization and comma rules?

Had this person whom I quite liked in high school really turned into the kind of person who says things like “Have a wonderfully blessed day”?
I learned a long time ago to always side-eye folks who use the word “blessed” like an arrow. Or people who like their own Facebook posts. Come on, girl. Are you that desperate?

I always get a chuckle from people who request a civil discussion after pretty much annihilating everyone they claim to be courting for mature dialogue. It’s the problem I have with cartoon Christian conservatives. They claim to be living for love, but everything on their agenda is anti when it comes to people and pro when it comes to concepts, like closed boarders [sic], the First Amendment, and… um, God.

Their mantra seems to be: “What’s mine is mine. You’re on your own.” Is that the Christian charity I’ve heard so much about?

As for the First Amendment that they’re always touting, it apparently doesn’t apply to critics of police brutality or a grown ass man who would rather kneel than stand during the national anthem. It only applies to them.

I wonder if this woman would be open to having a civil discussion with a man who grabbed her by the pussy because she is beautiful and he’s a celebrity, or one who judged her because she may or may not have been a teen mom.

I wonder if this black woman would be so eager to share a friendly back and forth with a white supremacist, one of those “very fine people” (in the word of Donald J. Trump) who rues the day the Union won the Civil War.

Is this really how she thinks one should begin a civil conversation — with judgment and recrimination? Her “truth” isn’t even her own. It’s something she thinks she read in a book.

Lord help anyone who happens to be different from her. Well, actually, maybe He couldn’t be bothered. Apparently, her God has a type and that type has to think and love just like Him, worship like people who worship Him, and be from the same country as those people who worship Him, or off to His hate list they go. Yep, apparently her God can’t be love because He hates big.

I’m over unfriending people whose political beliefs don’t line up with mine. But since she asked so nicely…

In the comment section of her post, I wrote: You sound like a hateful misguided woman. Your wish is my command. Unfriend.

And poof. Just like that, she disappeared from my News Feed. Forever.

She was “feeling determined.” I am feeling cleansed.

I have also gone through a Facebook purge...I have unfriended anybody who posts pro-Trump hate. Oh, not people who support Trump - but, if they repost anything racist, homophobic, Islamaphobic, against education, against the environment, against the transgendered, against the homeless - they go. No discussion about it. No explanation. Just unfriend and block. Blocking is necessary to keep from discussions happening I discovered.

Sounds like a great idea. That way when the world changes around your little (remember, you made it smaller) bubble you'll never know what happened. That's what happened when Trump was elected Prez. Stay in your echo chamber, the rest of us will continue to remain open minded. You, no doubt, will laugh and sneer at that but it's true no matter how you spin and deny it.

You seem to think that I am not aware that people who pretend to speak for God and Christianity are nasty and hateful people and that I should be constantly on guard against them. I'm on guard against them via events and political actions - I don't need to call them 'friends.' I'm not that thirsty.

Tristan, the word 'disappointment' doesn't begin to cover it, does it? Add a cup of 'shock' and a bit of 'confused' to smooth it out a bit, but we've all gotten those emails or posts on Facebook. This line is the most shocking to me:
I hate what God hates and love what God loves.
What? God hates? Well, that's got to be a stunner to those of us who have been taught that God IS LOVE and WE are supposed to LOVE as GOD LOVES. Love your neighbor--not just your evangelical neighbor--not just your conservative neighbor.

This is why people are leaving the church. My sons were raised in the church but now neither of them wants anything to do with the HYPOCRISY of the Christian church. Why is it so hard to LIVE and LET LIVE?

A friend from college emailed me a few weeks ago and asked me about a political Facebook post--something I posted. It was political humor but he took tremendous offense from it and asked me WHY I posted such an "offensive" meme. I was stunned.
I replied that it wasn't meant to be taken so seriously, but there was a ring of truth in it.
His reply was "You won't be hearing from me again." AND I haven't.

How sad for all of us---to lose people who have meant so much to us because they can't separate politics from personal relationships.

The “little bubble” is that of the Trump supporters (remember, more people voted against your candidate then for him). Fox News is now your only source of news since Herr Dumpster has declared anything else “Fake News”. Allies become despised enemies the second they do not fall in lock step with Dear Leader. Every day Trump shows what most of us knew before the election, that he is unfit for the office of President. People in his own party are trying to distance themselves from him.

The bubble around Trump is small and getting smaller every day.

Yes, God is love, but surely you don't think that means God loves murder. Surely you don't think God loves rape. How can it be such a stunner that God hates some things?

I agree. But this is elitist and presumptuous coming from any human:

I hate what God hates and love what God loves.
Really? That person claims to mirror the mind of God. This person claims a perfection only God can claim.

Thank you. I was trying to come up with some way of saying this, but the words weren't coming. Being human, i can barely attempt to love how God loves. Any attempts of my own at hate are far too influenced by my own sinfulness that I shouldn't even try.

You're welcome, and agreed again!

Sometimes I contemplate/meditate on the love of God. It truly is beyond human capacity to love as the Creator loves, or even to comprehend the scope of it.
