And what if classified videos are posted showing war crimes being committed? Just look for "Collateral Murder" and you'll know which one got Chelsea Manning in prison/while the killers...as usual go free and actually are all back in the US for many years now. Wonder what they're doing now!
The possibility that classified information might be hiding a crime is, IMO, not a justification to do away with classified information. I think the best check, while not perfect, is Congressional oversight where that oversight has representation from both parties. If you have a better idea, let's hear it.

You leave men in warzones too long and you either have to cover up their crimes...which include murder, rape and even theft and corruption, or you make sure you have predetermined just how long you need troops in occupied spaces with hostile locals who don't like foreign invaders of any kind! And that's why the US Government has gone with the former! The great public shame today is that support for fascism, authoritarianism and making whistleblowers the criminals in the process for revealing pure evil to people back home, is now also supported by the supposed 'opposition.' So, after 8 years of Obama in power and Dems expecting to have Trump out and redecorating the White House in 2020, the Democrats and their center-liberal supporters are enemies of free speech and whistleblowers also! Congratulations! America has no real checks on corruption and abuse now, and the American people will only find out what the rest of the world knows after it's too late and your empire which is already teetering on the brink of destruction finds that it has no friends left after it falls! Even America's allies of convenience in Europe are sick and tired of Trump aggressively trying to shake them down for more money to support US bases and buying weapons!

I'd layoff the fermented maple syrup.

Chelsea Manning is an American hero. She opened our eyes. So is Edward Snowden. These are people who risked their lives to bring us the truth. They are heroes. At some point, a law needs to be made to protect these people.

These two people believe in the promise of America and the ideal of America. When they found evidence that we were countering those ideals, they spoke up, and said something, much to their personal peril. That needs to stop. When our country does wrong, we should know about it. Whistleblowers should have absolute protection. I think we can all agree on this.

Both of these folks did something more brave than any of us probably could. And they are the best Americans I can imagine. Because they believe in what we stand for, and are not afraid to say so, regardless of the consequences.

They are the most famous, but there are many other whistleblowers who also took risks they didn't need to just because they wanted to stop crimes and inform the public about their government officials lie about and what goes on in secret.

Right now, Chelsea Manning is the big story, because, although the governing parties act like Bobsy Twins on most military and security issues, this move by the Trump Admin. to put Manning in jeopardy by demanding she submit to the secret star chamber examination otherwise known as the grand jury process. This is done out of pure malice, since Manning already signaled beforehand, when the rumors of a grand jury were popping up that 'she would have to act on principle' and refuse to cooperate, and that she already gave her full testimony during her trial and had nothing further to add to anyone trying to build a case against Assange now, that wasn't already in her court testimony. If the Government can put some flesh on the sealed indictment they've been holding against Assange since Obama was in the White House, that would be an indicator that Trump&Co. are willing to go where Obama and all other previous governments were not: going out of their way to prosecute journalists and their publishers for "publishing state secrets!"

See, if they can't put together a clear case that Wikileaks hacked Democratic Party emails, then they don't have a case unless they're willing to go after any media that publishes classified material they're received. Obama didn't want to put his mainstream media friends in jeopardy by going after Assange for publishing. But Trump has few friends in media...even FoxNews! His gang would think nothing of putting New York Times editors in the docket! And so much for the rest of us being able to learn about what the hell is going on! So, salute to Manning, Snowden, James Sterling, John Kiriakou, who all except for Snowden have had to do time for the crime of revealing much more serious crimes that were intended to be kept secret by those in authority!
