This little critter, the next step from Hayabausa-1 which retrieved a sample of an asteroid and returned it to earth, has already exploded a small bomb on a different asteroid creating a 20 meter crater. They have now got a rover or two at the crater so they can get relatively original rock samples and return them to earth. Those are scheduled to arrive in 2020.

This asteroid is very old rock from near the time of the big bang but surface rock has been bombarded by cosmic radiation would cause significant change in the rock. Thus this amazingly complex procedure will allow scientists to glimpse far into the universe's history.

Neat stuff.
